Hughesville Locals Oct. 23, 2019

By Staff | Oct 23, 2019

There’s no doubt about the season as I look out the window: Leaves of a wide range of yellow, red, and orange coloring dance down the street, and my mums have taken on the rusty tinge of frostbitten petals. While it isn’t cold enough for a parka or wool coat, my light windbreakers aren’t warm enough, so I have begun relying on layers. Dressing for the day has become a more time-consuming effort and the laundry hamper seems to fill up much more rapidly.

The recent windy spell reminded me of Percy Bysshe Shelley’s poem “A Dirge”:

Rough wind, that moanest loud?Grief too sad for song;?Wild wind, when sullen cloud?Knells all the night long;?Sad storm whose tears are vain,?Bare woods, whose branches strain,?Deep caves and dreary main,–?Wail, for the world’s wrong!

When I read it, it has a much more mournful tone than I remember from a choral version, but it is so descriptive and really fits some of our steel-gray October days. Then the sun emerges and I am reminded that there are few places that have such a glorious season as a Pennsylvania autumn!

There is a lot going on, with construction crews working to finish projects or complete phases so that work can progress in the spring, and civic groups holding autumn festivals and outdoor activities. It is time for Halloween preparation, so get out your costumes and porch decorations and stock up on treats for the young ghosts and goblins who will be ringing doorbells next week.

Congratulations to the HHS athletes who have qualified for District level competition! The HHS Girls Soccer team advanced with a win last week and we wish them the best. The Girls Varsity Tennis team finished their season with a 13-6 record, a great example of “Spartan PRIDE.” Go Spartans!
