Hughesville Local column for November 6, 2019
November was ushered in by a stormy blast, but I hope we won’t have too much of that sort of weather to deal with. I am not a fan of changing traditional holiday observances for convenience, but I do think it was a good decision for our local area to postpone the Halloween parade and trick-or-treating time. Since it has become a cultural celebration, not a religious one, moving the events for safety is wise.
Congratulations to Ryan Bahr and Hunter Foust for qualifying to compete at State level in Cross Country running! These student athletes have trained and worked throughout the fall to improve their times and can be very proud of their achievements.
It’s time for Veteran’s Day and our local schools will be holding a variety of observances to mark the day. Students and staff will be presenting veterans with gestures of thanks and appreciation. Next week the schools will have time set aside for parent conferences on Thursday afternoon and all-day Friday, so make sure to check with your child’s teachers for an appointment.
Varsity winter sports will begin soon, but the Junior High Girls basketball teams have been competing since the end of October and they are putting on some impressive displays of teamwork and skills! The seventh grade team, after just two games, had scored 75 points while only allowing a total of 24 from two opponents. I really need to make a point of attending some of these games! ?
Leaf collection in the borough seems to be a bit late this year as most of the trees have shed all their foliage and folks have been piling them up along the curbs. The recent wind has shifted things somewhat, so hopefully it will only take one or two passes of the leaf-vacuum truck to get things cleared away once they get started. I did hear that we may have some snow flurries in the next week, so let’s hope the leaves are cleaned up before that begins. ?
Have a great week!?
