Muncy/Hughesville Locals3.11.2020

By Staff | Mar 10, 2020

In the mid-1970s and leading up to the United States’ Bicentenniel celebration, a local group of seven women nearing their ’50s collectively began meeting to share a common interest: quilting. Inspired in part by the American colonial quilting demonstrations and other displays that were prominent during the 200-year anniversary, the women continued to meet each Tuesday to stitch, socialize and in some cases, pray for each other.

Three knew each other as classmates: Janet Confer, Frances Spring and Lola McCarty, my mother. Others included Kim Singer, Connie Egli, Helen Marsh and Gloria Sones (please extend forgiveness if any names were excluded). After being introduced to quilting, my mother, already a well-known area seamstress, called quilting her purpose in life, and became an expert in the art, teaching and mentoring young and old. She and her friends looked forward to each Tuesday gathering, meeting initially at the Hughesville Public Library when it was located on the corner of Water and Main streets. Their meeting place eventually relocated to the Pennsdale United Methodist Church when a guild was officially created in 1993.

Although four of the original women have since passed away, Janet, Frances and Kim remain, still piecing together quilt tops and stitching partners. A small display was erected at last week’s annual Susquehanna Valley Quilt Guild quilt show, honoring those deceased who fell in love with quilting and passed that love along to countless others. Special thanks to Gail Kocher Smith and everyone involved who put much time and energies into preserving that love.

Belated birthday wishes to the Luminary’s favorite “Farmer,” Richard VanBuskirk, who celebrated March 6.
