Jade Heasley

The children in town have now headed back to start a new school year. When a new school year starts, it always brings back memories of my own school days. I’m sure I’m not the only one.

Lots of things have changed since I was a child, but I don’t think the thrill of new school supplies and clothes and accessories is ever going to fade for any generation.

I do feel bad that kids today will never have the thrill of picking out a shiny new metal lunch box. This was back during a golden era of childhood where every lunch box came with a coordinating thermos, which made the lunch box extra cool. It makes me sad to think that now kids will never know the thrill of walking into a store and seeing an entire aisle filled with metal lunch boxes and getting to choose any one they want.

I can still remember sitting at the lunch table and seeing the other kids’ lunch boxes and admiring the graphics on them. They were all pop culture masterpieces, each one featuring a different cartoon series or movie. Believe it or not, I can still remember some of those lunch boxes as well as the classmates whom they belonged to!

And as awesome as all of the other children’s metal lunch boxes were, I secretly thought that my Muppet Babies lunch box was the coolest one of all. I still have it, although sadly the Kermit thermos is long gone.

I know that kids nowadays carry various cloth and plastic lunch boxes, and some even carry Bento boxes. I just hope that they all treasure their lunch boxes as much as I did, and that getting a new lunch box is as much of a fun experience for them.
