Montgomery Locals

When October comes to town, it brings one of my favorite autumn traditions — the Montgomery Volunteer Fire Company’s Fall Festival and Pumpkin Roll.

This year the event will be held on Saturday, Oct. 19. The Fall Festival will be held at the carnival grounds from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. There will be vendors and the Firemen’s Kitchen will be open as well. It’s lovely walking around the carnival grounds as the leaves are changing.

And while the scenery is nice, it’s even better to see your fellow townsfolk and catch up with everyone. It’s fun to see all of the different vendor booths with a nice variety of items for sale.

It’s also the place to buy a ticket to participate in the Pumpkin Roll.

The Pumpkin Roll will take place on West Houston Avenue at 3 p.m. Everyone is invited to come and watch this event for free.

If you’ve never attended the Pumpkin Roll, then let this be the year you start. Part of West Houston Avenue is temporarily blocked off as the fire company dumps a trailer load of pumpkins at the Kinsey Street intersection. Hundreds of pumpkins tumble down the hill, which is an amazing sight — as well as sound. Some of the pumpkins roll past the Brook Street intersection. The ten pumpkins that roll the furthest are the winners. The people who hold the tickets with the numbers of the winning pumpkins receive monetary prizes.
