PIAA State Class A First Roundup

Muncy, ranked seventh in the state to Steel-High’s fourth, traveled to Dauphin County Saturday and was edged by the Rollers in the PIAA Class A first round 50-43. The Indians trailed 43-14 more than a minute into the second half. The Indians scored two touchdowns in the third when Ross Eyer and Branson Eyer connected on a 62-yard touchdown, and another with a 35-yard touchdown closing the gap to make it 43-26.

In the fourth quarter Steel-High struck first with a 7-yard touchdown pass to increase their lead, but Muncy responded with a long kickoff return from Eli Weikle to set up Gush’s 1-yard TD, and a two-point conversion pass from Loudon Boring to Gage Wertz pulled the Indians within 50-35. Gush then intercepted the Rollers in the end zone of the ensuing drive, and Muncy scored again on an Eyer-to-Eyer, role-reversal touchdown in the final minute. The two-point run by Branson Eyer made it a seven-point game.

Gush, a senior and captain, totaled 155 yards and a score on 21 carries. Ross finished with 143 yards and three TDs on five catches, while Branson actually caught that last TD from Ross after he accumulated 244 yards through the air on 10-of-17 passing.

Hughesville 26, Montgomery 7

Colton Yocum rushed for 222 yards and a touchdown, and Hayden Robbins recovered two fumbles as Hughesville defeated Montgomery 26-9. The Spartans finished with 377 yards on 61 carries and committed no turnovers. Montgomery’s Kaide Drick went over the 1,000-yards rushing to end this 9-game season. Drick entered the game needing 134 yards for 1,000, and his 25-yard run to start the game’s finals drive put him over. He finished with 170 yards on 27 rushes, giving him 1,036 yards for the season.

Hughesville’s 11-minute possession edge not only neutralized Drick, it kept the arm of leading area passer Logan Almeida on the sidelines. A 7-1/2 minute drive in the third quarter opened by Robbins’ second fumble recovery failed on downs at the Montgomery six, but it set up field position that helped the Spartans keep control of the second half up 20-7. A 34-yard Angelo Ferrigno touchdown in the fourth quarter was an exclamation point.
