Peace Walk Jan. 19

The First Annual Community Alliance ‘Peace Walk’ sponsored by STEP Inc.s’ Community Connect AmeriCorps program has been scheduled for Monday, Jan. 19, known as Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day.

Co-sponsors of the event include Big Brothers Big Sisters of Lycoming County VISTA and City of Williamsport

Americorps is a national service program that offers opportunities for people of all ages and backgrounds to serve in their respective communities. One of the focal points of Americorps is to actually engage in special service projects on Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day.

Americorps programs throughout the United States are dedicating this day to honor the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and promoting volunteerism

and service to their communities. The MLK Day slogan is a ‘Day on’ and not a ‘Day off’.

Registration is from 9-10 a.m. at Messiah Lutheran Church, 324 Howard Street, Williamsport with light refreshments and t-shirts for the first 250 participants.

Opening remarks are scheduled at 10-1030 a.m. with Damon Anderson, Executive Director of Big Brothers Big Sisters of Lycoming County. At 10:30 a.m., the walk begins across the Market Street Bridge to the Salvation Army gymnasium.

From 11:30-12:30, special speakers include Savonna Reagan, AmeriCorps member; Mayor Gabe Campana; Valorie Taylor’s Expressions Dance troupe; Melodie Russell, Executive Director of The Center, and Dr. Betty McCall, Profesor of Sociology at Lycoming College. Essay Contest winners will also be announced at this time. Refreshments provided at the Salvation Army. Transportation is available from the Salvation Army back to Messiah Lutheran Church
