Tractor Sunday observed at Moreland Baptist Church
“Ride your tractor to Church Sunday,” was observed for the first time at Moreland Baptist Church eight mile east of Muncy on July 19. Thirteen in number, the unusual mode of transportation for churchgoers included several makes, models and colors which were parked adjacent to the church.
“Annually, the congregation hosts a Sunday picnic and game time, and the newest addition to the the day’s schedule had good participation,” said coordinator Kay Wallis.
During the worship service, Pastor Ingraham said, “It’s good to celebrate who we are. Some people may call us ‘Red Necks,” but I consider that a badge of honor. We are a simple people, and all equal in God’s eyes, regardless of the color of our eyes, skin, types of jobs or the make of tractors we drive. We are having a fun day in the Lord.”
For those keeping score, the tractor tally was: John Deere, four; IH Farmall, two; McDeering, one; Allis Chalmers, one, Silver King, one, Massey Ferguson, one; Kioti, one, plus two John Deere lawn tractors.
Winners in the contest categories were: Oldest tractor, a 1948 IH Farmall by Jay Snyder who also won the favorite pick category. With his John Deere 4430, Bob Raup won for the most modified or restored; and from near Lairdsville on his John Deere 70, Vernon Temple was deemed as driving the longest distance. Prizes were given out for each category.
