By Staff | Jul 7, 2016

BARB BARRETT/The Luminary Pre-school story time is popular Friday mornings at the Hughesville Area Public Library. Director, Katherine Butler is reading a story on fish. She also created a game for them to play by tossing a small stuffed fish into the jaw of the shark sitting next to her. This Friday the library is hosting a dance party for the kids.

Things are in full swing for summer fun and the local libraries have planned plenty of family activities to keep busy during these laid back months.

Just about everyday there is a fun activity going on at each of the 3 libraries in the tri-town area for all age levels. Some of the highlights include a summer reading program for students with prizes and gifts for rewards. All it takes is just 15 minutes a day! Reading logs are due at each of the libraries August 15 in order to claim the prizes and special ones will be awarded to the top 3 readers.

Programs are also offered for adults such as coloring hours for therapy, field days, and ways to save money using coupons and store rewards.

Every Friday morning there is a story time hour with a craft and a snack at the Hughesville Public Library and Tuesday nights is family game night. In June they held a life size Candy Land game and July will present a food picnic and a zombie night.

Everyone is welcome to attend a performance by Tom Seiling at the Montgomery Area Public Library on Friday, July 15 from 5 to 7 p.m. This family friendly song and music program is aimed at children in kindergarten through fourth grade. Seiling accompanies himself on the guitar and he will also be performing at the Hughesville Library on August 3 and the Muncy Library on July 15 at 10 a.m. He also plays banjo, harmonica and a drum machine. Montgomery Public Library is celebrating 105 years this year and will continue to offer monthly drawings for discounts and prizes.

BARB BARRETT/The Luminary The Muncy Public Library is sponsoring summer activities for children of all ages. Open family play is held every other Saturday from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. Rowan and Matthew Adams from Muncy frequently visit the library and enjoy playing with the learning toys.

In July the Muncy Public Library will feature plenty to do for teens on Thursday nights starting with a drawing club on the 7th, making a “Zentangle” mural on the 14th and tye dye crafts for July 21st. Classes will run from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. Open family play is every other Saturday according to Amber Adams who is conducting several of the children’s activities at the Muncy Public Library. “We are really looking forward to the “Busy Hands” night on Tuesday, July 26 for the 3 to 5 year olds.” Also scheduled for this age group is pre-school storytime on Wednesday mornings from 10:30 to 11:15.

Director Katherine Butler announced more upcoming events at the Hughesville Area Public Library outside of the regular scheduled summer program activities. There will be a Movie Night featuring Star Wars: The Force Awakens to be held July 22 at 9 p.m. Attendees are asked to bring their own lawn chairs. For ages 5 and up a Construction Club will be held earlier that day at 2 p.m. in the Community Room. “Go for the gold during our second annual library olympic day on July 27,” she said. There will be a variety of events to test both physical and mental health.

Montgomery just acquired a new game computer with lots of fun and educational games for kids to play according to director, Sue Thomas. It is available during the library’s summer hours.

To get a full schedule for these events, visit any of the libraries and ask for their calendar of events. There is going to be yoga for kids, the Game of Life, a pre-school block party, and cookie decorating just to name a few.

Happy reading for a happy summer. Win prizes, free goodies and more.

JADE HEASLEY/The Luminary  Kids at the Montgomery Area Public Library made snow globes on June 15 as part of the Summer Reading program. When they finished with their craft they enjoyed snacks and juice and each got a small gift for attending.  On Weds. July 13 the children will be making wind chimes.
