HUGHESVILLE – The fall air, the band music, the camaraderie – mix that with a little competition for football goers, and you have a night to remember.

Friday, September 22, was deemed Alumni Night at the Hughesville High School football field. The event was the brainchild of the school’s alumni association in coordination with District Superintendent Michael Pawlick, coaches and supervisors of various departments.

Tents set up for sign-in of alumni from various groups included wrestling, basketball, band, tennis, cheerleaders and more. The $200 donation to the group with the most sign-ins went to the football team.

Each group awarded a free door prize. Winners and donors were: Roy Zeisloft, gift certificate to Right-a-Way convenience Store or Auto Detail; James Dewire, gift certificate from Silverthorne Tavern; Stacie Hopkins, gift certificate to Split Ends Hair, Nail and Tanning Salon; Ryan McClain, gift certificate to Silverthorne Tavern; Rilynn Temple, earrings from jeweler Rick Mahonski; Jane Smith, Canasarago Grange cookbook and sweatshirt. Baskets were also provided by the girl’s softball, and basketball teams. Additional winners were John VanBuskirk, Jim Stroup and Frankie Delker. Additional donors were HHS Alumni, Cheri’s House of Flowers, TJ’s Market, Susquehanna Valley Sportswear, Kathy’s Caf and Weis Markets.

According to alumni president Tom Smith, the association seeks ways to remain visible within the alumni community. Attendance to the annual banquets are decreasing in number as classes choose to host separate gatherings. “We encourage classes to attend both,” said vice president Ann Ryder Myers.

At the game, cards noting the upcoming 82nd Alumni Banquet were available. The ‘Save the Date’ cards noted Saturday, May 26, 2018 as the next banquet at the HVFD Social Hall.

“We were happy with the turnout,” said president Smith noting plans came together in less than six weeks. “Many asked if alumni night would be an annual event to which I answered, we’ll evaluate and see.” The committee met recently and decided to again host alumni night next season. This was the first time an event was held for the alumni at a football game.
