HUGHESVILLE – Local veterans get to ride in style when traveling to the Veteran’s Medical Center located in Wilkes Barre. About two times a week the van will stop at the newly opened Fuel-On gas station and convenience market on the corner of Main and W. Water Streets in downtown Hughesville to transport those eligible.

Formerly known as the Uni-Mart which opened in 2002, the facility has been closed for the past three years.

According to veteran Robert Miller, who is a regular passenger on the van since 2014, the service was still available during the closing.

However, a new plaque was issued to honor the new staff and personnel for their support and service for the veterans. The van is available for pick up at the store every Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday morning at 8:20 a.m. To be registered to ride on the van, a call to the Veteran’s Assistance Office at 570-327-5281 in Williamsport is required to determine eligibility and appointments. The office is located in the Executive Plaza at 330 Pine Street and the van is always parked in front of the Costello Center on Warren Ave. in Loyalsock Township.

Ashley Miller, the new manager at Fuel-On said, “We are happy to provide this service and help with the veterans.” A plaque was issued in their honor on Wednesday afternoon, April 18th at 1 p.m. in front of the store in Hughesville. This is the second time tor a plaque. The first one was issued in 2013. The American Legion Post 51 and the Vietnam veterans are the sponsors and donated time and funds to present the plaque.

Volunteers are needed to assist in driving the van according to Miller.
