Five faculty members from the Muncy School District were awarded grants totaling over $2,600 to enhance the educational opportunities of their students. Presentation occurred at halftime during last Friday’s football game.

Billie Jo Grohol, principal at Ward L. Myers Elementary School, was awarded a $350 grant which will fund the training of 10 teachers to use a weather station that was recenty installed at the building. This additional training can enhance the science curriculum and be applied to all grades K-12.

Kindergarten teacher Rae Pitchford and special education teacher Crystal Edkin were awarded $500 to enhance interpersonal skills and achievements in reading with their students. They plan to teach interpersonal skill standards through the use of literature, and team-building while fostering a culture of kindness.

Expanding upon a NASA training conference they attended this summer, high school teacher Mark Keisher and sixth grade teacher Rob Wallis received a grant for $1,153. Their intention focuses on students in sixth, seventh and eighth grade learn to code and program on a robotic platform using coding, blue-tooth connectivity and rover technology to mimic what is done at NASA. Their goal is to bridge connections of science, mathematics, history and communications in order to show student that learning technology through the processing of engineering requires students to recall knowledge from various subjects to enhance problem solving.

Wallis also received a separate grant for $600, which will fund the purchase of two mobile standing desks to his classroom. The option of standing allows for student to have increased activity with the goal of increasing their attention levels. The ability to stand in the classroom has been proven to promote a healthier metabolism while burning more calories.
