The Muncy Luminary and Lycoming County Advertiser-Feb. 26, 1886

Mr. Alfred Lyon died at his home near Hughesville last Thursday, February 18, aged 68. He belonged to one of the old pioneer families of the Muncy Valley, being a son of the late Grundy Lyon.

Messrs. Waldron and Sprout’s improved mill with corn cob attachment delights every one who sees it. This mill has been perfected after long study and many experiments, and is today by all odds the very best in the market.

Several young ladies of this place are planning touring parties for the coming summer. The first walk will be to Clarkstown where they will take dinner, and return in the evening.

Rev. W. F. Steck and son, John, spent Thursday and Friday with the former’s sister, Mrs. Newton N. Achenbach, at South Williamsport.

Ten aged women-widows, daughters and cousins of Civil War veterans, were burned to death early Tuesday morning in a fire which burned the Pennsylvania Memorial home, at Brookville. Four women were rescued unharmed, and one other woman received slight burns. Mrs. Margaret Meixell, of Williamsport, escaped uninjured from the fire.

Supervisors of Muncy Creek township and members of Muncy Borough Council met recently and discussed filing an application for CWA assistance in cleaning the channel of Glade Run, between the northern limits of the borough, and its outlet into the river.

It was thought that working together the borough and township could obtain the best assistance. Deepening of this channel would eliminate the flood waters which frequently inundate the streets of the third ward when heavy rainstorms fill the Run to such an extent it overflows its banks.

Rays-Mrs. D. G. Reed and Martha Steiger entertained at dinner and a personal shower at the latter’s home, last Thursday evening in honor of Miss Lois Reed, whose marriage to Eugene P. Fahringer will take place April 2.

Births-To Mr. and Mrs. George Hunter, of 329 Union Avenue, Williamsport, February 13th, a son who has been named Homer Alvin; to Mr. and Mrs. Dave Frey, at their home on South Main street, on Wednesday a 7 1/2 pound girl.

Deaths-Newton Bair, age 80 years, one of this borough’s most highly respected citizens, died at midnight Tuesday night; word has been received here by William H. Banzhaf, of the death of his brother, Edward Banzhaf, of Denver, Colorado, on Friday, February 16.

Ad-Sea trout, 10 cents per pound; fillets of haddock, 18 cents per pound; oysters, 15 cents per dozen.

Several business changes of local interest have taken place in the last few days including: Lewis Bieber, of Muncy, has purchased the former Mom’s Lunch on the Muncy-Montoursville highway just west of Muncy; Robert N. Campbell, local plumbing and heating contractor, purchased the business and inventory of Frank Girton, of Bloomsburg; the transfer of Ashurst Manor Inn from ownership by Don Ulmer to ownership by a trio of Williamsporters-Chauncey Tepel, Dr. Charles L. Youngman and Luther Fish, and a hardware store in what was formerly the Golden Rule Grocery, to be owned by G. R. Bennet and Son of Mifflinburg.

An experience he described as “a rare thrill” was enjoyed one day last week by Raymond (Bill) Karshner, when two Philadelphians presented themselves at his home carrying Capt. John Brady’s long rifle-a collector’s item which few people even know is in existence.

Personals-Miss Barbara Mae Edmond and Harry Thomas Gautsch, son of Mr. and Mrs. Emanuel H. Gautsch, former residents of Muncy and Hughesville, were married Jan. 31 in St. Petersburg, Florida.

The Brown Cow, ice cream stand and gift shop constructed two years ago at Twin Hill’s on the Muncy-Williamsport highway, has been sold by Clarence M. Snyder of Muncy to new owners Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Sones, of near Millville.

Lycoming County Commissioners have approved a revised $27,868,528 budget for 1984 that contains a $10,000 subsidy for the Muncy Valley Hospital to over a deficit in the operation of its long term care unit construction.

Personals-Mr. and Mrs. Charles Swinehart, 108 Lafayette St., Muncy, have announced the marriage of their daughter, Bettine C. Holmes, to Gene E. Miller, son of Mr. and Mrs. George Miller, of S. Williamsport, Thursday, the 16th of February.
