March 7, 1901

W.C. Painter, M.J. Colley and George Rogers attended the inauguration of President McKinley and Vice-President Roosevelt, at Washington, on Monday.

Frank M. Opp, has been appointed teller at the Citizens National Bank in place of Ross McKnight, who recently resigned.

Miss Mazie Trumbower gave a surprise party for Mr. and Mrs. Samuel Heller at their home on So. Market Street, Saturday evening. A number of friends were present and spent a delightful evening.

103 years ago

March 7, 1907

After an illness of only a week, Luke Ellis died at his home in Delaware Township, Northumberland, aged 62 years.

Benjamin Meckk died at Schuylkill Haven, on Tuesday, at 2 o’clock, after a few days illness of pneumonia, aged 73 years.

The borough council was organized on Monday night, and the following officer were elected: President, Harry Corson, Secretary and Treasurer, Fred C. Peterman, Street Commissioner, S. D. Renn.

On Friday, March 1st, Mr. E.B. Smith, the oldest merchant of this place, was seventy-nine years old, and notwithstanding the severe illness passed through during the past years, he is enjoying good health with clear mind.

John D. Robb, of Muncy township, was given a hearing before Justice of the Peace Robert B. Burns, Friday evening, charged with breaking and entering granaries and with larceny of wheat in three different cases.

Deaths:Ollie Floyd Schreck, 45, died about midnight Sunday night, from injuries received when he was attacked by a bull, which he was attempting to put in the barn at the Wert farm near White Deer, where he was employed.

Dr. Charles W. Youngman, who was 76 years of age, died at 3 o’clock Tuesday morning following a stroke which occurred on February 14.

Dr. Herman F.W. Flock, aged 40 years, died at the Temple University Hospital at 7:35 last night following a two-weeks illness. Death was caused by streptococci throat infection which spread intracranially and the development of a spreading cellulitis of the face.

C. Brady VanDine, former Justice of the Peace and well known resident of Hughesville, died at 7:00 o’clock Tuesday morning, at the home of his son-in-law, George Poust, at Hughesville. He was 82 years of age.

Thomas D. Dietrich, aged 87, a visitor of Turbotville, from Falls City, Nebraska, died at the Muncy Valley Private Hospital, Feb. 27. Death was the result of pleurisy.

Ground breaking ceremonies for the new edifice to be built by the Pilgrim Holiness Church just east of Muncy will be held March 6.

Work on construction of a new addition to the A & P Supermarket in Muncy may start sometime in May.

Henry Buck, of Hughesivlle, has purchased the Mercer-Robinson Co., property on Railroad St.

Five area wrestlers attending Bloomsburg State College will participate Friday and Saturday in the Pennsylvania State College wrestling tournament at Lock Haven: Billy Hughes, of Muncy, at 115 lbs.; Dale Sullivan, of Hughesville, at 137 lbs.; Wayne Rider, of Hughesville, at 157 lbs.; Don Poust, of Muncy, at 167 lbs.; and Bob Rohm, of Muncy, at 177 lbs. with a 9-1 record (has lost only two dual meets in four years of varsity competition.

Employees, students and friends of the Ferrell elementary school in Picture Rocks presented “Ferrell Follies” to a crowd of over 200 last Saturday night.

Muncy’s Kevin Strickland after losing to Dave Kennedy from Athens, 6-1, put it all together in winning three in a row to place third in the 126 pound class this past week at Regionals in Williamsport.
