June 20, 1901

Frank Riddell, son of the late Charles Riddell of this place, graduated May 29th at the Leland Stanford University, Calif., and is now visiting his mother, Mrs. Laura Riddell, at Ellensburg, Wash., where she is teaching in the Normal school.

The game of ball on Saturday afternoon at this place, between a team from williamsport and the home team, resulted in a victory for the latter by a score of 6 to 3, five innings being played.

It is said that A. H. Heilman and Co., of Williamsport, have bought the property on Third street, that city, opposite the Stearns building, and that a handsome new building will be erected on the site.

A very pretty wedding was solemnized Tuesday afternoon at the home of John J. Bieber, on Easts Water street, when their daughter, Miss Amy, was united in marriage to Mr. William E. Herbst.

Invitations are out for the marriage of Emily Crouse Shoemaker of this place, to Harry H. Houston, of Jersey City, on the afternoon of Thursday, June 27th at 4 o’clock at St. James Episcopal Church.

Eight Muncy boys attended Camp Kiwannis: Donald Bardo, Norman and Donald Heincelman, Walter Scott Jr., Harold Snyder, Kenneth Baysore, Robert Martin, and Carl Anderson.

Died: Mrs. Sarah Brown Ellis, died Friday morning, June 14th, at her home on West Poplar street, following a stroke which she suffered about a week ago.

Mrs. Charles Kirby Rath, of New Jersey, announces the engagement of her daughter, Miss Jane Kirby Rath, to Mr. W. Paul, Lee, of Muncy, son of Mr. and Mrs. Barry B. Lee, of Muncy.

A cottage wedding ceremony occurred at 6 o’clock Saturday evening, ,when Miss Martha Gottschall, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Reuben Gottschall, and Emerson Frantz, son of MR. and Mrs. Lester Frantz, were united in marriage at the cottage of Rev. and Mrs. Earl B. Williams, near Tivoli.

John Hagerman and family and Captain and Mrs. Benjamin Renn were visitors at the Hagerman Farm at Towanda on Sunday.

Linford Frey Sr., of East Muncy, disclosed this week that he has resigned as a supervisor in Muncy Creek township, effective June 1.

John Dennen, Mrs. Richard Delsite and Mrs. Margaret Smith, teachers in Muncy high school, have submitted their resignations, thus bring to five the number of vacancies existing on the faculty for the coming term.

The Hughesville Methodist church was setting for the wedding on Sunday, June 12 of Miss Doris Jane Whipple, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Grant Whipple, of Hughesville and George Lynn Poust, son of Mr. and Mrs. Dela Poust of Muncy.

The Helen Eaken Eisenhower chapel at University Park was the setting for the pretty wedding on June 12 of Miss Barbara Lyle Morrow, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Karl Morrow, of Dunmore, and Kenneth Gould Bryfogle, Jr., son of Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth Bryfogle, Muncy.

Miss Yuanita Pearl Fry, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Harley Fry, of near Muncy, and Roger William Frantz, son of Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Frantz, of Muncy, were married Friday evening, June 10, at the Muncy Baptist Church.

Alfred C. Knecht, of Montoursville, will be coming to Muncy’s Ward L. Myers Elementary School as acting principal. He will replace Don Berninger who is on sabbatical leave.

The “Bed Pans” of Geisinger Medical Center took first place at the Muncy Valley Hospital’s first annual Bed Race held last Saturday.

Fire Chief Butch Dauberman and President of the Pennsdale Fire Company, Jack McCoy, presented Ellis Artley with a gold watch and badge honoring him for 35 years’ service to the company.

The Picture Rocks Baptist Church will be observing the 100th anniversary of the church building on June 29 and 30 with a special celebration.

Miss Anita L. Trick, daughter of Mr. George C. Trick of Muncy and Mrs. Sharon K. Ball of Hughesville, became the bride of Mr. Mark R. Smith, son of Mrs. Mary Ensinger of Muncy on June 22.

Deaths: Clifford B. Hoffman, 76, of Turbotville, died June 22 in the emergency room of Muncy Valley Hospital after being stricken at his home; Myrtle R. Shaffer, 88, a resident of Char-Mund Nursing Home, formerly of Hughesville died June 18.

District Attorney Thomas A. Marino has announced that approximately three miles of terrain along Sulphur Spring Road in Armstrong Township will be searched this week, three years after the body of 10-year old Jolene Witt was found there by hikers September 6, 1997. Witt had been missing from her mother’s Muncy home since July 27, 1997.

Births: Candi Ryde and Melvin Gelnett of Hughesville announce the birth of a daughter, on Wednesday, June 14.

Sermon on the Mound was presented last Friday evening at the First United Methodist Church in Muncy as part of the Music Day Camp program held throughout the week.
