Oct. 24, 1901

Mrs. Ann Repasz Gowers, wife of the late George Gowers, died Saturday night at 11 o’clock at the home of her son, Preston, on South Market street, aged 84 years.

L. G. Wattsw, S.D. Renn and H.L. Albright, were on the river Monday morning huning wild ducks, and in a short time succeeded in bagging six fine specifments.

George H. Rogers family enjoyed feast off five pheasants last Saturday. It took three of the male members and two assistants to caputre that number on a shooting excursion.

A delightful party was given at the home of Miss May Barbaour, on Friday evening, in honor of her guest, Miss May Fullmer, of Picture Rocks

Oct. 24, 1907

While B.W. Harris was tying his horse in front of B.R. Grange’s store last Thursday morning, a barrel of sweet potatoes rolled down the steps, frightening the animal, which tore loose and ran away.

While the engine of freight No. 71 was shifting a car on the Muncy Manufacturing Company’s siding yesterday the whistle was broken off by striking on a new trestle which was too low.

Mr. and Mrs. J.H. Dimm, Mr. and Mrs. George Stoltz and son, Leonard, and Mrs. Emma Stoltz and son, Bruce, spent Sunday as the guest of MR. and Mrs. Maurice Stover in Montgomery.

Fire about 2:30 o’clock Wednesday morning destroyed the large barn on the farm southeast of Muncy known as the Gundy Wolf farm, with an attending loss of $8,000, which is not covered by insurance. The property is owned by Harvey D. McCarty.

Tuesday evening a variety shower was given for MR. and Mrs. Charles Wood, in the social room of the Presbyterian church by members and friends of the church and Sunday school. Many useful and beautiful gifts were received by the young couple.

Each Wednesday afternoon at 2:30 a radio program of special interest to parents is broadcast over the N.B.C. network. This fifteen minute program is sponsored by the National Congress of Parents and Teachers.

John L. Bruch, of the Muncy Water Supply company, stated today that the water supply is at the lowest ebb it has been since the severe drought of 1930.

Max Murray, local high school student, suffered a severe gash on the nose requiring five or six stitches when the car in which he was riding in company with Lee Barnes and Edison Frey upset at the curve near Wolf Run bridge, north of town, about 1:30 Tuesday morning.

Deaths: Sarah R. Bertsch, aged 85 years, a former resident of Muncy, died Monday morning at 12:40 o’clock at the home of her son, Samuel, 55 East Third Street, of complications following a fall down a flight of stairs; J. Brady Bigger, of Hughesville, former sheriff and resident of Sullivan County, died suddenly Saturday morning of a heart attack.

Approximately 350 employees of Modecraft Co., Inc. were listed this week when they refused to report for work on Monday following expiration of their union contract with the company at midnight on Sunday, Oct. 16

As the oldest continuous business firm in the borough of Muncy, Harter’s Drug Store this month is observing its 100th birthday.

Officials of the Muncy Little League organization this week were studying the possibility of acquiring the lot owned by the Muncy firemen on Green street as a future L.L. field.

Mayor Richard Thomas Jr. announced that he is not running for re-election for the office of mayor, but that he is in the running for borough council.

A surprise 60th wedding anniversary party was held recently at the Mt. Zion social hall, Hughesville, in honor of Mr. and Mrs. Harold P. Fry, Muncy.

The engagement of Miss Michele Ann Burkholder to Mark D. Couch has been announced by the bride-elect’s parents, Mr. and Mrs. Ronald A. Burkholder, Middletown. Mr. Couch is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Ronald Couch, Muncy.

Mr. and Mrs. Donald Sherman Sr., Montgomery, were recently honored at an open house at Eagle Grange #1 on Oct. 19 at their 50 wedding anniversary.

Michelle Blackburn, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Cecil Blackburn of Muncy and Aaron Harman, son of Mr. and Mrs. Harland Harman, Hughesville were married on Oct. 26.

Jacqueline Suzanne Newcomb, 17, a senior, died when the hunting cabin located near Muncy Valley in which she was staying was destroyed by fire in the early hours of last Sunday. A Hughesville youth, Donald A. Charles, 18, also died in the fire.

As predicted, four foot snowflakes will soon appear along Main Street in Muncy.

Hammer in hand, Robert Murphy, of Muncy, travelled to Plains, Georgia in September to aid in the construction of eight homes on property donated by former president of the U.S. Jimmy Carter.
