The Muncy Luminary

August 21, 1902

Washington Meck, while at work on a barn near this place on Friday last, had the fingers of his right hand quite badly cut by a hatchet falling upon them.

A very pleasant stag party was given John McCowan at his home on South Main street Monday evening.

Last Friday afternoon a five foot black snake was killed on a cellar door at the residence of George Turner, of this place. It was discovered by some of the ladies of the household, and after others had been called in his snakeship was killed.

The excursion to Harvey’s Lake on Saturday was well attended and and all the Muncy people report a very fine trip, except a Port Penn young man and his lady friend, who missed the train at the lade,

One of the finest set of harness’s residents ever seen in Muncy was the set recently made by John Z. Sheridan for Wm. E. Haines’ pair of mules” “Nip” and “Tuck”.

Mrs. Martha Leeber and daughter, Hazel, Miss Ida Stokes and Miss May Brock have returned home from a two week’s trip to New England points.

Charles Wing, former editor and publisher of a newspaper at La Porte a number of years ago, was a visitor at the Luminary office this week.

Mr. and Mrs. George W. Green and daughter, Ann, who recently visited at the home of MR. Green’s mother, Mrs. De La Green, will sail on August 25th for Panama.

A surprise tureen dinner was held at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Theodore Schoch last week in honor of the latter’s birthday anniversary.

Died; Elizabeth Confer, died at 8:05 o’clock Saturday morning, following a stroke which she suffered Friday afternoon. She was 72 years old; Joseph N. Bugh, aged 83, prominent resident of Hughesville, died Friday evening at 9:30 o’clock at his home on North Main street, after an illness of several weeks.

Two Muncy high school athletes were injured, one seriously, in a collision early Sunday morning when their car snapped off a telephone pole at the Sherman-Pepper street intersection in Muncy. Peter Brant, son of Mr. and Mrs. Elwood Brant of Pennsdale, and Denny Warg, son of Mr. and Mrs. Clifford Warg.

Phyllis McClintock, third grade teacher at Muncy resigns.

Miss Matilda Orlans became the bride of Terry Schwenk on July 16.

Verus Shaner, of Hughesville, has received a certificate designating him as a maximum profit feedsman.

Hughesville’s New Post Office to be dedicated at program on July 22.

Betty and Coleman Funk of Muncy completed their recent mission trip to Romania.

Shirley Umstead Applegate keeps her lot on the corner of Lycoming and Second Street in Hughesville looking like a corner in the Garden of Eden.

“The Sky is Falling, The Sky is Falling”-Tom Swisher, owner of the Quik-Stop in Hughesville, had not problem finding this suitable quote for his 28-year old sign when the sound of a meteor falling from the sky near Salladasburg was heard in Hughesville.

John Betz of Danville has been receiving “The Luminary” more than 26 years, in order to keep up with area news that sometimes includes his Opp cousins.

A Farm/City Day is planned for Aug. 11 in Muncy.

Births: A son was born to Diane M. Mass and Scott E. Hoey,Montgomery, July 13, 2001. A son was born to Stephanie Newton and Philip Trostle, Muncy on July 24, 2001.

Deaths: Mary A. Smegielski, 89, of CT., died July 27 at home. She was born in Montgomery, PA; Robert Bruce Artley, 89, of Muncy, died July 27; Ernestine M. Cox, 75, formerly of Hughesville, died July 23; Bette L. Stackhouse, 79, of Hughesville, died July 27.
