The Muncy Luminary

August 28, 1902

A new drum Corps, under the management of Edward Wertman, has been organized in this place. They expect to play in Williamsport today.

Morris Worthington, of Green street, has a very sore arm, as the result of being bitten by a dog on Saturday. He tried to separate two dogs who were fighting, when the larger one turned upon him, biting him in the right arm.

Mrs. Mary Quinn, widow of the late John Quinn, entered into rest at her home on South Main street on the morning of the 27th, inst., in the 73rd year of her age.

Charles Waldron and wife and Mrs. Silas D. Renn attended the annual farmers’ exportion at William’s grove this week.

Aug. 31, 1911

Margaret B. Merrill and Harvey Burrows Hall, both of this place, were married in Williamsport at noon Saturday, at the parsonage of the Calvary Baptist church, the Rev. Geo. D. Brookes officiating.

The C.K. Club held an informal dance at Smith’s hall last evening. The committee in charge were Misses Amelia Waldron, Margaret Rogers, Elizabeth Winegardner, Helen Gowers, Martha Albright, and Helen Rogers. The event is very pleasant one, a number of out of town guests being present.

Mr. and Mrs. J. E. Eaker entertained a number of little folks Monday evening in honor of their daughter, Beatrice. About thirty guests were present.

Miss Helen M. Heller, daughter of MR. and MRs. William E. Heller, of Muncy and Walter P. DeLozier, a state highway patrolman stationed at Milton barracks were united in marriage last Thursday morning.

Mrs. Althea Smith, daughter of Mrs. Mary Banzhaf, and Mr. DelRay Sprout were united in marriage last Wednesday.

The Y.M.C.A. with headquarters at Harrisburg has chosen Eugene P. Bertin, of Muncy. Editor of the Dept. of Public Instruction, to serve on the World Service Committee of that organization.

During the lightning storm of Tuesday evening, the large Mansion House barn on the McKee estate at Watsontown was struck and burned to the ground.

Died: John Henry Erdley, aged 80, died Sunday morning at the Williamsport Hospital. Death occurred on the 54th anniversary of his wedding.

Col. Harry Merrill, former Muncy resident, undergoes surgery on eye with hope of curing 13-year old blindness.

Roy Swartz, of near Muncy, has been accepted as a junior member of the Holstein-Friesian Assoc. of American.

Old iron bridge in Moreland will be replaced by State.

Pie eating contest participants Don Beaver, Ann Schooley, Harold Cummings and Don Jacopetti dig in at the Meck Center in Muncy last Friday. Contestants included Ray Spotts, Jim Ryan, Roy Guthrie and Pete May all of Hugehsville and Clair Stahl of Clarkstown. Guthrie was the winner while Stahl was runnerup.

The Muncy School Board of Directors held a public hearing Monday evening to inform the public of the proposed referendum to eliminate the occupational assessment tax and replace it with an increase in earned income tax.

A Feeding Frenzy with Jesus and Friends to be held at the Clinton Township Park in Montgomery.

Winning three events each for Tri-Town swim team at the All Star Meet were Hilary Hayhurst, 10, in the 100 yard individual medley, the 50-yard freestyle and the 25-yard butterfly; and Jacob Plocinski, 14, the 50-yard freestyle, the 100-yard freestyle and the 50-yard butterfly, breaking the 50-yard butterfly record with a time of 27.24 seconds.
