The Muncy Luminary

Dec. 18, 1902

Married: Mr. B.W. Harris and Miss Tranie Sprout of this place were married at the brides home last Thursday by the Rev., D.L. Woods of the Baptist Church; Mr. and Mrs. Isaac Gortner delightfully entertained a number of friends at a 6:00 o’clock dinner last Thursday evening. Among those present were Mr. and Mrs. Chas. Gortner, Mr. and Mrs. Clinton Tule, F.H. Heilman and daughter, Jessie, and Rev. W.F. Steck.

Mr. and Mrs. W. C. Crawford gave a party on Tuesday in honor of their son, David’s seventh birthday. A number of little folks were present and all had a nice time.

Friday evening a pleasant party was tendered Richard Edwards, at his home on South Main street.

100 Years Ago

Dec. 21, 1911

William Buck, a well known resident of Muncy, was found dead near the banks of Wolf Run, Wednesday afternoon. Mr. Buck had been dead, in the opinion of Coroner Hardt, since Monday afternoon and his body was frozen solidly to the earth. He was 68 years old and is survived by a wife and three children.

Harper Dykins, son of G. Guise Dykins, will enter the United States Naval Academy at Annapolis, Md., next year.

A pleasant party was given at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Robert K. Reeder, Friday evening, in honor of Miss Helen Kift, of Muncy, the occasion being her birthday.

Headline: Robert B. Burns, S.B. Dunlap Die Suddenly-Both were Prominent Citizens

Grover Smith, 40, of Muncy, was fatally injured and five others sustained injuries from which they are recovering, in two accidents which occurred on the Hughesville-Lairdsville road Saturday night.

The John Brady Future Farmers of America recently enjoyed an Oyster stew at the school laboratory.

The Women’s Choral Club will hold their Winter Concert on the evening of Dec. 30th in the Muncy-Muncy Creek High School auditorium.

Harold Turner is the new president of the Muncy Creek Township School Board.

Died: Walter E. McConnell, 85 year-old retired farmer, of Hughesville, died Wednesday night; Mrs. Ida Mae Renn, aged 71, died Monday morning at the home of her daughter, Mrs. William C. Margargle, Opp, R.D.

Marine Cpl. Jack Yocum, son of Mr. and Mrs. Charles E. Yocum, of near Montgomery, is taking part in Exercise “Warm-Up,” a joint naval marine amphibious operation in the Okinawa area, while serving with the Second Battalion of the Third Marine Regiment.

Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Stover, a daughter, of Oxford, N.Y., Mr. and Mrs. Ebner Fellinger, of Hughesville, were guests of Mr. and Mrs. Merlyn Stover.

Deaths: Harry S. Swartz, 80, descendant of a founder of the borough of Hughesville, died Oct. 29; Jerome R. Levan, 31, of Williamsport, former local resident, died Oct. 27 at his home; Dell Roy Lebo, 83, of Muncy, died Oct. 25 in the Muncy Valley Hospital.

During the Southern Columbia District 4A playoff game Friday night, Muncy’s senior quarterback, Mike Conner, set a new Lycoming County career touchdown pass record of 51.

When Jeanne Berninger raises her hands on Dec. 2 to signal the beginning of the first of the 2001 Christmas concerts of the West Branch Chorale, her stwenty-fi8fth as director, she will no doubt be remember a quarter century of involvement with the local singing group.

Eugene and Nancy Reese Shaner of Beaver Lake Road were the guests of a 25th anniversary party held recently at her mother’s place, Helen Reese Corson.
