The Muncy Luminary

Thursday, Jan. 28, 1904

Among the heavy losers by the recent flood and ice jam at Bloomsburg, was S.G. Bryfogle, who has a large greenhouse at that place.

A party of jolly young people from Hughesville came to Muncy Monday evening and spent a very enjoyable time at the home of Miss Lulu Dimm. The party was gotten up by Miss Eva Michael.

An axle of one of W.B. Soars’ milk wagons broke Monday morning and caused the driver, Mr. Soars, some inconvenience before the damage was repaired.

Thursday, Jan. 30, 1913

Samuel Bertsch, of Muncy, and Miss Lena May Smith, of Mayview, Mo., were married several weeks ago.

Mrs. Abigale A. Geisinger, aged 88 years, has approved the plans of a $600,000 hospital, which she is going to present to Danville.

Mr. and Mrs. Walter Santee, of Allentown, formerly of this place, have been the guests of Mr. and Mrs. George Poust on Penn St.

Thursday, Jan. 27, 1938

A costly fire Wednesday morning at Picture Rocks, destroyed the old Mecum home, lately known as the The Elms, owned by S. L. Jacoby.

Evelyn Neitz, of N.Y., and Kenneth Kahler, of this place, were united in marriage on Jan. 6.

Miss Blanche Berger and Miss Mae Stahl entertained at a tureen supper and variety shower at the former’s home, in honor of Mrs. Wilden Nuss, nee Jennie Brass.

The Williamsport and North Branch Railway company, whose 45 mile line in Lycoming and Sullivan Counties extends from Halls Station to Satterfield, has been authorized to abandon its line and sell the property to any responsible person or firm which offers as much or more than the line’s net salvage value.

Died: George Kenneth Swartz, age 11 months, son of Mr. and Mrs. Paul Swartz, of near Pennsdale, died at the home of his grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. George P. Swartz, after two weeks of pneumonia; Lester Monroe Poust, 42, Hughesville, died Sunday evening; Margaret Leavy, 77, died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. H.G. Sanders, of Montoursville.

Members of the Eagles Mere Fire Co. constructed the famous Eagles Mere Toboggan Slide. Folks in Eagles Mere hope cold weather continues for awhile.

Mr. and Mrs. Wilber Turner celebrated their 50th anniversary on Dec. 18.

Announcement has been made of the engagement of Sallie Sue Stump to Thomas Albert Stiadle, II, of Muncy.

Mr. and Mrs. Elwood Hans, Montgomery, have announced the marriage of their daughter Julie Ann to Donald Lynch of Allenwood.

Area resident serving our country: Air Force Airman Joseph D. Pearson has graduated from basic military training at Lackland Air Force Base, Texas. The airman is the son of Linda Pearson of Hughesville and Joseph Pearson, Hughesville and is a 2002 graduate of Hughesville High School.

Customer Wilbur Rupert has been going to Yoder’s Diner off and on for 30 years. The good home cooking makes the diner a popular spot for many local patrons.

Hughesville High School graduate Kurt Aaron Carichner, a member of the storm-tracker team at WNEP-TV, is back in the area after following the winds of opportunity around the country.
