The Muncy Luminary

Thursday, Feb. 16, 1905

The play “A Confederate Spy” is being rehearsed by local talent for a production in the near future for the benefit of the Sons of Veterans.

Five ancient cannon balls have been found in old Fort Augusta, at Sunbury. It is supposed they had been imbedded in the ground since the days of the Colonial and Indian Wars.

Thursday, Feb. 12, 1914

Jerry Holdren began sawing the lumber on the Warren B. Hoffman farm, Muncy R.D. 3, Monday morning. A portable mill was set up last week for the work.

The new hotel at Harley Hall to take the place of the hostelry destroyed by fire last winter, is rapidly nearing completion. The place is a well known roadhouse, much frequented by motorists, passing up and down the West Branch Valley.

Thursday, Feb. 16, 1939

A chimney fire at the home of Benjamin Anderson, Sherman Street, called the Muncy fire company out at 9:30 this morning.

We are glad to report that Miss Mary Dildine, who is a patient at the Danville Hospital, continues to improve. She is gradually regaining the use of her fingers which were quite badly frozen.

Died: Mrs. Mary Ball Newman, 72, died at 6 o’clock MOnday morning, Feb. 13th; Horace Gold, 75, well known and highly respected farmer of Turbotville, died Feb. 11; Harman Taylor, 68, formerly of this place, died suddenly at the home of his daughter Saturday morning, Feb. 11; Sarah Lowe, aged 74, died at the home of her daughter, Feb. 10.

John C. Miller, Muncy senior, has been named a finalist in the highly competitive National Merit Scholarship program.

Mr. and Mrs. Harvey Allen will observe their 50th wedding anniversary on Feb. 20.

Mrs. Harry Stein recently spent several days visiting her daughter, Miss Linda Stein, a student at Taylor university in Indiana.

William J. Wallis, of Muncy, as been promoted to captain in the United States Air Force.

Minus 20F weather and very little snow on the ground didn’t prevent over 350 Scouts from the Susquehanna Boy Scout Council from having a great weekend of camping and Scout activities.

Area resident serving our country: Navy Seaman Jason M. Cooley, son of Sharon E. and Dale F. Cooley, Muncy.

Muncy resident Fred Temple shovels off the first few inches of heavy snowfall on Main street last Tuesday, which resulted in a snow day for local school districts. An ice storm plagued the area three days later, resulting in a second snow day for children.

Thirteen schools and groups gathered at the Muncy High School gymnasium last Saturday for an elementary wrestling tournament.

Births: Kelsey Ewing and George Warner of Hughesville, a son, Jan. 25, 2004.
