The Muncy Luminary

Thursday, March 30, 1905

There is not a vacant house for rent in Muncy and we are informed by local real estate men that they are unable to supply the demand. The amount of labor required in repairing the buildings damaged by fire, the new Lutheran Church and widening of Penn Street will require more laborers than Muncy can supply, hence there will be new comers that will need homes.

Miss Madge Rogers came form Philadelphia on Saturday, to officiate at the Rogers-Vandine wedding that takes place April 6.

Harry Funston was accidently hit with a file, while working for Sprout, Waldron & Co., in the machine shops, Saturday. A deep gash was cut in his cheek.

Thursday, March 29, 1914

A pretty home wedding was celebrated last Wednesday, March 21, when Grace Rentz, became the bride of Harry Whitmire.

Sunday afternoon, when Mrs. Amos Poust, of Green Street returned home from a visit to her daughter, she found the dead body of her husband swinging from a rafter in the cellar, with his hands tied behind his back. Joseph Smith, game warden, cut down the body, and it was decided no inquest was necessary.

Mrs. Elizabeth Grange and family have moved from the Noble house on North Main Street in the property recently purchased from the Charles Petrikin estate.

Melvin Fenstermaker, Muncy, recently suffered a broken leg, when a team which he was driving, ran away, overturning the wagon and throwing him into the road.

Died: Marietta Baker, formerly of Williamsport, died Saturday afternoon; Ida Ruth Walton Weaver, 87, died at her home Tuesday afternoon following a four-year illness; Hannah Smith, 87, died Tuesday morning at the hoe of her daughter, Mrs. Earl Walters, Hughesville.

Mr. and Mrs. Charles Sprout will move into the property to be vacated in the near future by Dr. Sara A. Hall. Mr. and Mrs. W. J. McCarty expect to move into the Sprout home

Lynn Sager, ninth grade son of Mr. and Mrs. Fred Sager, Muncy, was first place winner in the Muncy Junior HIgh school science fair held over he weekend.

Arthur J. (Pinky) McMurtrie, Muncy native who founded Milton Steel and Supply company in 1927 and was one of Milton’s most active civic workers died tuesday, March 24.

Mr. and Mrs. George S. Waltman, Muncy, announced the engagement of their daughter, Georgianna, to Lt. Thomas F. Womack, of Dallas, Texas.

Steve Budman proved the wrestling experts correct in their preseason prediction and number one ranking of him as he glided through the 135-pound PIAA championship bracket to become Hughesville’s 12th state champion.

Area resident serving our country: Airman Michael D. Hilner, a 2003 graduate of Hughesville High School and is the son of Karen and stepson of Denny Swimley of Muncy.

Faulty electric wiring within wall beams on the first level confines was the cause of a blaze that destroyed the Hughesville business and apartment of Matthew L. Cendoma, located at 12 S. Main St., on Monday.

Urie Kline, son of John and Lana Kline, a Muncy High School student, received notification last week of advancing to the PA State National Geography Bee.
