Tuesday, May 16, 1865

150 years ago

The services of the commission of the enrollment board being no longer needed, Robert Hawley, Esq., of this borough, was honorably discharged from the service on the 8th instant as commissioner of the 18th district of Pennsylvania, a position he has filled with credit to himself and satisfaction to those having business with his office.

A house has been discovered in Washington city belonging to a Mrs. Green mined and furnished with underground apartments, furnished with manacles and all the accessories to private imprisonment. The plan had been at first to kidnap the President and as many other leading men as they could and imprison them in Washington.

George Dreisbauch, an influential and respectable citizen of this place, committed suicide on Saturday morning, the 6th instant, by cutting his throat with a razor.

Died-In Muncy Creek township April 28, Mrs. Charity Zarr, aged 72 years, 10 months, 26 days.

Died-In Muncy Creek township on the 9th instant, Mrs. Margaret Snyder, wife of Daniel Snyder,aged 61 years, 9 months and 21 days.

Died-In Stephenson county, Ill., on the 15th of April, Eleanor, wife of James Taggert, and daughter of the late Robert Ireland, of near Milton, Pa., aged 42 years.

Died-In Washington township on the 26th of April, Fleming Betts, aged 33 years, 8 months and 25 days. Member of Company D, 143rd regiment, P.V.

135 years ago

Terrible fires have raged in the oil region during the past week, Thursday, several small owns, 500 wells and 200,000 barrels of oil were destroyed. The loss was estimated at several hundred thousand dollars.

Forest fires have been raging this week in this part of the state, Sullivan county being the latest sufferer. The hemlock forests of that county have been burning two or three days and great quantities of timber are reported to have been destroyed.

We call the attention of our readers to the card of Dr. W. L. King, of Lairdsville. Dr. King is said to be a young physician of much promise and is a good citizen.

Bruce Kelly, son of Mr. Martin Kelly, came near drowning one day this week in the Muncy dam. He was rescued by Henry Sheridan just in time to save his life.

Married-At the home of William Brobst, East Muncy, May 11, 1880, by Rev. James Hunter, Mr. Charles E. smith, of Hughesville, and Miss Mary M. Kisner, of Muncy, Pa.

There are almost 100 students from other places attending the Normal School this term.

One of the social events of the season was the wedding at Mr. and Mrs. Charles Downing yesterday morning when their only daughter, Edna Luella, was united in marriage to Cordeen C. Pfleegor.

Dr. and Mrs. H.S. Weigle , of Muncy, left early yesterday morning on an auto trip to visit Lieutenant and Mrs. Wallace Clay in Boston.

Thomas Renn, who some years ago resided in Muncy, committed suicide on Thursday morning.

Died: Mrs. John J. Ellis, about 81, died at the home of her daughter in Watsontown on Sunday.
