150 years ago

Quite a number of our soldiers are being discharged and returning home. Fifteen, mostly belonging to Sullivan county, passed through this place Sunday morning, among whom was our old friend T.A. Dent, of Davidson township. They belonged to the 141st regiment.

The manacles have been removed from the limbs of Jeff Davis, it is said, upon the recommendation of a physician. Failing health is the reason.

The corner stone of the National monument at Gettysburg will be laid on July 4th next. President Johnson is to perform the ceremonies.

100 years ago

A large crowd of people from Muncy and vicinity crowed the streets Monday to take part in their presence in the exercises of Memorial day, which were most interesting.

At the M.E. parsonage, Muncy, on Tuesday evening at eight o’clock, Mr. Raymond P. Phillips and Miss Bertha M. Poust were joined in the hold bonds of wedding.

Members of the sophomore class of Muncy high school drove to the home of Samuel Bussler at Chippewa Thursday evening, where they were pleasantly entertained.

Edward Houser, aged twenty-five years, dropped dead at noon Saturday at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Morehart on Broad street, where he had stopped while on his way to join other members of the Citizens’ Military band to take part in the Memorial day parade. Death was due to heart disease.

Married-George O. Bowman and Miss Ethel I. Cassett, both of Opps, were married in Williamsport on Saturday.

The most coveted honors for Muncy High School 1965 graduates were bestowed on May 26 to Miss Dolores Wilt who received the Heilman Scholastic attainment award; Michael Myers, who won the annual Sprout-Waldron scholarship, and Miss Connie Fahnestock, who was awarded the Muncy Bank and Trust company prize.

Miss Jan Pfleegor, a record breaking swimmer for the Williamsport YMCA, and daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Pfleegor, of near Muncy, has been awarded the Y’s top honor-“Athlete of the Year”.

In a double ring ceremony on May 22 Miss Linda Lee Artley, of Muncy, became the bride of Mahlon Dale Sweigart, of Reinholds.

Judge Thomas Wood of Muncy will give the principal address at the traditional Memorial Day program for Hughesville on May 30.

Lynlee and Blyth Stover have returned to Syracuse, N.Y. after a visit with their grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Merlyn Stover.

Died: Jesse Dewalt, 81, Montgomery, May 21; Max M. Schoch, 54, a Muncy native.

“Fireman of the Year” awards were presented to two area men during the Montgomery Memorial Day services. Jeff Winder, of Montgomery, was honored for nine years of service and Robert Eder, Jr., was honored for 15 years.

Muncy High School 7th and 8th graders held a Spell-a-thon to benefit the children’s hospital center at Geisinger Medical Center on behalf of the 1990 Children’s Miracle Network Telethon.

Roy Zeisloft of Huntersville entered the AAU wrestling tournament in Hughesville and took first place.
