Tuesday, June 20, 1865

150 years ago

The contractor, Mr. J.F. Manville, we notice, has commenced the repairs at the Muncy bridge. The false works have been erected under one span and we learn preparations are being made to go on with the work as speedily as the timber can be prepared.

Married-On the 15th inst., in this place by Rev. D. Castleman, Mr. M. Taylor to Miss Emma J. Flick, both of Muncy Creek township.

Died-Suddenly in Lock Haven at the house of his uncle, Dr. E. W. Eldred, Harry S. Eldred, son of Hon. C.D. Eldred, of Williamsport, aged 19 years.

Died-In Williamsport, on the 3rd, Andrew s. Tinsman, son of Garret Tinsman, aged 24 years.

100 years ago

A fire which was discovered shortly after midnight Tuesday morning, for a time threatened the entire Decker block, located in the very heart of the business section of Montgomery. The stores that suffered the most from fire, smoke and water are Housel & Baker’s Music store, the City Bakery, Ritter’s Jewelry store, N.E. Sterner’s restaurant and Dr. Harry Carter, dentist. The loss probably will exceed $15,000.

The third annual Chautauqua assembly under the management of the PA Chautauqua association of Swarthmore, will open at Chautauqua park, Picture Rocks, Pa., on July 26, and run through “seven joyous days.”

Memorial services were held by Brady lodge, I.O.O.F., of this place last Saturday afternoon when the graves of the departed members of the order were decorated.

Mr. and Mrs. David Opp, of Clarkstown, held a large barn raising at their farm on Thursday. Mrs. Opp, with the assistance of a number of ladies, served a fine dinner to seventy-five men who assisted at the raising.

Grant Painter, son of Mr. and Mrs. G.L. Painter, returned home last evening from Bucknell university walking on crutches. Sometime during Tuesday night he go out of bed in his sleep, crawled out of a window onto a porch and walked off the porch falling quite a distance very badly injuring his foot band ankle.

Died-T.K. Ritter, 22, Walnut Street, passed away last Saturday shortly after 5 o’clock in the afternoon, after only a ten days illness; George Edkin, 80, of this section, died Monday morning at his home in Strawbridge; L.H. Newton, White Deer valley, Civil War veteran, died at his home near Montgomery Monday morning, aged 82; C.E. Green, Muncy R.D., died Wednesday morning.

Miss Carol Burkhart became the bride of Roger LeVan Becht on June 5.

Engagement announced of Martha Brown to Lynn C. Phillips of near Muncy.

The wedding of Miss Nancy Cara Walters, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. W. Charles Walters, of Hughesville, to David Lee Voneida, son of Mr. and Mrs. LeRoy Voneida, Hughesville, will take place on June 12.

Trinity Lutheran church in Hughesville was the scene of the wedding of Miss Rita Mae Wertman and Phillip Lee DeWire on May 29.

Dr. and Mrs. R.A. Bennardi and daughters, Anna Maria and Theresa, are spending severals days in New York visiting friends and attending World’s Fair.

Chris Klinger, president of the MEA presented a “letter of concern” to the members of the Muncy Board of Education at a workshop meeting addressing the recently proposed board decision to eliminate four and one-half professional teaching positions for the 1990-1991 school year.

Former Muncy resident Mark Greenberg celebrated Father’s Day with a triple treat-his two year old triplets. Mark, a 1972 graduate of Muncy HIgh School and wife, Gwen, now living in Boston, were home in Pennsdale recently visiting Mark’s dad, Budd Greenberg.

Petty Officer Second Class/E-5, Daniel K. Montgomery, Jr., of Muncy, recently returned from is second deterrent patrol onboard the nuclear submarine USS Stonewall Jackson.

Birth: Mr. and Mrs. Howard Watts, Muncy, a son, June 8. The mother is the former Lorraine T. Thomas.
