Tuesday, August 1, 1865

150 years ago

Married-At the Episcopal parsonage, Lewisburg, on the 12th ult., by the Rev. Roland H. Brown, Robert Slater and Miss Tillie Brass, both of Northumberland County.

Died-On the 10th ult., near White Pigeon, Mich., Mrs. Susan Kelchner, daughter of the late George Shoemaker, of Muncy Creek township, and wife of Daniel Kelchner, formerly of this county, aged 50 years.

The remains of Bishop Potter left San Francisco for Panama on July 18.

135 years ago

Mrs. A.V. Elliott, of Washington, who is a daughter of Dr. William Hayes, Muncy, narrowly escaped being drowned at Lewis Lake on Saturday last. With a party of friends she went sailing and the boat capsized.

Quite a serious accident happened to a Muncy party on their way to Eagles Mere Tuesday morning. The party consisted of Rev. and Mrs. W.F. Stahl, their two children, MIss Nevin, of New Castle, Del., and Mrs. H.W. Petrikin. The horse backed them over an embankment with a creek 60 feet below. It is a miracle that all were not killed. Mrs. Stahl was badly bruised.

A few days ago Mrs. John M. Bowman, while fishing for minnows in mid river, hooked one of the largest bass of the season and there was a sensation. Mrs. Seiler, Mrs. Campbell and Miss Annie Bowman came near being successful fishers.

100 years ago

Mrs. Annie Herbert and Miss Elizabeth Winegardner left on Monday for a trip through the west and the Panama exposition.

While fishing in the river last Friday evening, at Port Penn, Bert Houseknecht succeeded in hooking a salmon that measured 31 inches and weighed 11 pounds.

Died: Harriet Wells, died at the home of her daughter at Bloomsburg on Sunday evening at the ripe old age of 82 years.

Married at Danville-Irving Boyer, of Williamsport and Miss Blanche Reese, of Hughesville, were united in marriage on Saturday morning at the home of the groom’s father.

Ownership of an old Muncy landmark changed hands recently, it was disclosed this week as Misses Ruth Kline and Elizabeth Bates revealed the sale of Penn Hall to Harold Shultz, of Muncy.

A highway corridor connecting Lock Haven and Milton on a route through Jersey Shore, Williamsport and Muncy has been approved under the new Appalachian Regional Development program.

Died: Alverta M. Winder, 46-year old widow who was killed about 12:30 a.m. when her car skidded on the highway at Mile Hill and collided with an oncoming vehicle.

Stella M. Hauke, 92, died in Picture Rocks, July 24, where she was visiting, though her home was near Hughesville.

Sgt. Richard Allen, who recently returned from U.S. Army duty in Korea, has concluded a visit here with his parents.

Marshall Dapp, son of Mr. and Mrs. Lester Dapp, has returned to his home after serving two years with the U.S. Army in Berlin.

Mr. and Mrs. Corder Davis and family, Hughesville, have returned from a vacation at Walpole and Cape Cod, Mass.

Lew Gilgerti, general manager of Fairfield Chevrolet in Muncy, presented keys to the new 1990 Caprice Police Cruiser to Muncy Mayor Anthony Rizzo.

A member of the Muncy High School Class of 1990 was the first to receive a newly created scholarship. The Muncy Area Kiwanis Club Scholarship was presented to Gregory S. Walters by club president Michele L. Burns and Key Club Advisor H. Douglas Hays.

Alviretta Deewall, Montgomery, picked a full bag of string beans from her garden which she still maintains at the young age of 97.
