150 years ago

General Sheridan has been ordered to have mustered out of service all volunteer white troops, cavalry, infantry and artillery that can be dispensed with.

It is feared that the laying of the Atlantic cable has proved a failure. On July 29th insulation was lost but a defect in the cable was found which was cut out and a new splice was made. Since then nothing has been heard of the Great Eastern.

At the recent commencement of the Lewisburg university the honorary degree of LL. D. was conferred on the Hon. Simon Cameron.

Married-At the U.S. hotel, Williamsport, on the 8th inst., by Rev. S.W. Price, J.C. Cowden and Miss Anna M. Marshall, both of Level Corners, this county.

Died-In this borough, on Sunday afternoon, Jacob Coder, Esq., late of the U.S. Hotel, aged 54 years; ON the 27th ult., in Williamsport, Alonzo Cornell, aged 57 ears; In Williamsport, on the 2nd inst., Miss Virginia, daughter of Lewis and Sarah P. Martin, aged 18 years; at the residence of her son, at Trout Run, on the 6th ult., Mrs. Elizabeth Tallman, aged 82 years.

Married-On the 29th of July, in Muncy Creek township, by Rev. George Eicholtz, Mr. Robert Barr and Sarah J. Painter, all of Port Penn.

Work is progressing rapidly at the saw mill of Messrs. Thomas Lloyd and Joseph Kramer, opposite Montoursville. Twelve men are constantly employed and a large amount of lumber is being cut.

Rev. George M. Righter, Mansfield, officiated the Baptist church last Sunday morning when he preached on admirable sermon to a good congregation.

100 years ago

Last event Charles Vermilya, son of Mr. and Mrs. E.C. Vermilya, was struck by an automobile driven by Brady Snyder.

W.H. Ives, of Muncy, No. 7, has had a concrete reservoir built, about three-fourths of a mile from his residence and farming buildings.

The new $4,000 organ built by the Esty Organ Co., for St. James church, is now being installed.

One of the most interesting visitors to Muncy’s sidewalk book sale last week was Richard A. Frank, a scholarly, cigar-smoking reporter for Grit who usually spends his days off searching for rare and interesting books.

Visiting the World’s Fair is Miles Long, of Muncy, with his son, Ronald, and his wife, Lyvera.

Specialist Walter Prince, Muncy, was discharged from the Army on Sunday at For Hamilton, following three years and two months of service.

Miss Faith Dianne Lovelace, Montgomery and JOhn Blair Hinkle, Montgomery, married on Aug. 7.
