100 years ago

Last Thursday was observed as Farmers’ Day in Muncy. there was not as large a crowd present during the afternoon as were present last year, owing probably to the fact that the weather being so rainy all season that most all the farmers were very much back with heir work.

Ralph McWilliams, age d35 years,m was instantly killed at Montgomery Saturday morning when a part of the concrete wall of a building formerly used as an ice house fell on him wile he was working near it.

Fred Donoskey, aged 19 years, was arrested at his home in Montgomery Friday morning, where he was formally charged with the attempted robbery of William Decker, the wealthy proprietor of the Montgomery Table works.

A Muncy mother of three small children was killed and three others injured about 1:40 a.m. Sunday, Aug. 22, in a three-car crash on Route 147. Mrs. Dawn Marie Frey, 24, Muncy, wife of one of the drivers involved in the accident.

William H. Bird, a Muncy resident who has taught for the past eight years at Montgomery high school, accepted a teaching position in the Muncy high school.

Miss Mary Mahoney, Muncy, was an award winner at the graduation exercises held recently for members of the Practical Nurse Training Program.

The engagement of Miss Mary A. Tomkins to Ronnie Vandine has been announced.

Engagement of Miss Joanne L. Chestnut, Hughesville, to Frank D. VanHaelst, Muncy Valley; and the engagement of Miss Patricia Ann Lucas to Willard F. Temple of Hughesville.

An old-fashioned house-raising for the Howard Parks family, north of Picture Rocks, to place.

Mr. and Mrs. Heinz Backhus, Muncy, were honored at a surprise farewell dinner given by friends in the North Central Pennsylvania Soccer Community at the Hughesville Fire Hall.

It was Luminary nigh at the Bentley Brothers Circus, July 30, and Maureen Grieco, who is working for the paper this summer, served as guest ringmaster at the show.

Neil Shaner, son of Keith and Kathy Shaner of Remstein Air Force Base, Germany, will be traveling to Taylor, Michigan to play in the LIttle League tournament. Neil is a member of the European Little League team.

Alice M. Fremburg, director of The Strawbridge Art Gallery, which officially opened last weekend at Katie’s Country Store.
