Tuesday, May 29, 1866

150 years ago

Married-On the 10th inst., by the Rev. Jacob Young, M. Blodget to Elizabeth Trumbower, both of Muncy.

Died-On the 9th inst., at Mahoning, Indiana county, Mrs. Susannah Green, wife of Samuel Green formerly of this county, and daughter of late George Webb, of Muncy Creek township, aged 57 years.

The saw mill of Houseknecht & Craft, in Shrewsbury township, was recently destroyed by fire with about 100,000 shingles. The loss is about $2,000.

A fire occurred in Third street, Williamsport, Saturday night, destroying the county jail, the sheriff’s dwelling house and several buildings on the opposite side of the street.

Wheat is selling for $2.75 per bushel.

135 years ago

Died-On Sunday afternoon, May 22, Mrs. Mary Keller, at the residence of her husband, George D. Keller, in East Muncy, aged 59 years.-At her home on North Main street, on May 21, Mrs. Elizabeth Putnam, aged 64 years.

Letter from H.R. Wallis, who is on an engineering corps on the St. Paul, Minneapolis and Mantobe Railway, states that they have been surveying at the head of the Cheyenne river in Dakota territory.

On Thursday night of last week two horses and a set of single harness were stolen from B.M. Warn, of Moreland, a buggy being taken from the barn of John Ritter at the same time.

W.H. Riegel, who has been in DeHass’ carriage shop, left for Milton Monday night.

A motor car driven by Charles Sheddy, of Muncy, R.D. No. 3, collided with another car near the creek bridge, between Muncy and Hughesville, on Sunday.

Paul Houseknecht, of Moreland township, having driven to Muncy Saturday evening, was turning off of Main street into the alley opposite the post office when the rear wheel of his wagon struck one of the buildings at the side.

Mr. and MRs. William C. Crawford announce the marriage of their daughter, Florence Mabel, to Charles Westly Jackson, at Danville, Va., May 6.

Died: Benjamin Shoemaker, 89, Hugehsville, retired Clarkstown merchant, died May 18; Sarah Voneida, 77, Muncy, May 18; Clifton Egli, 74, May 18; William E. Shaner, 23, former Hughesville resident; Elmer E. Burkhart, one of Hughesville’s oldest resident’s, 95, died May 22.
