Enlightening Items from old Luminaries

150 years ago

1868

Mr. William Reed, an employee of the P. & E. Railroad Co., was instantly killed at the lower depot on Saturday last.

Spring seems to have fairly set in. As we write the weather is splendid, the roads have dried off in town, and are improving rapidly in the country. Indeed it is not often that we have so short a term of muddy roads at this season of the year.

1893

Married, March 23, 1893, Mr. T. Hess and Miss Bessie Flickinger, both of Muncy.

Cards are out of the marriage of Dr, R. Lyon of this place, to Miss Carpenter, of Uniontown, on Wednesday , April 5th, at the home of the bride’s parents.

Miss Sarah C. Wallis of this place, has recently received a letter from Mrs. M.B. Smalley, which sets at rest the rumor that has been afloat for some time that Mrs. Smalley was no longer in the land of the living.

On Thursday morning Mr. Jordan Walton and Miss Fannie Clapp, two of Muncy’s popular and highly respected young people were joined together in the holy bonds of wedlock.

The “Keep ‘Em Flying Club” met at Defense Headquarters Tuesday evening when the members began addressing the Easter boxes for Muncy’s service men.

Word has been received here of the recent death of Dr. Charles William Holley, 82, of Clearwater, formerly of Muncy.

Funeral services for Mrs. Mary Elizabeth Saxton Wood, 28, wife of William Wood of Muncy and Harrisburg, who died at the Williamsport Hospital Saturday and infant son whose death occurred Friday, were held Monday afternoon at the Wallis Funeral Home.

Word has been received here of the marriage of Miss Angela Hutchings of Whitbourne, Newfoundland, and Robert Greeves, U.S. Navy, Muncy, which took place Nov. 3 at St. Johns, Newfoundland.

Harold Hill, son of Mr. and Mrs. Reno Hill, of Muncy, won the State Championship in Wrestling at State College Saturday, Hill wrestled in the 103 pound class.

Huntersville-Mr. and Mrs. Harold Nunn attended the funeral of Mrs. Regina Nunn Friday at Pennsdale.

Born to Mr. and Mrs. Storris West a girl at the Muncy Valley Hospital Sunday.

A week ago on Tuesday the Muncy Lady Indians captured their first ever District IV Class AA championship by nipping the Lady Trojans of Troy by 59-58.

A 1961 Muncy graduate and the daughter of local couple, Dorothy and Harvey F. Corson, recently had her book “Martha, Mary, and Jesus” released for publication.
