The Muncy Luminary

150 years ago

1868

The Steam Saw Mill of M. Fox and Company, in Shrewsbury township, this county, was destroyed by fire on Thursday night last.

Some rascal or rascals entered the store of Bodine and Warn at Hughesville, on Thursday evening last, ,chiseling the knob off the safe.

Hon. John A. Speaker of Hillgrove, in the county, died very suddenly on the morning of the 7th inst.

Married E. R. Noble of Muncy to Miss Mary Hepburn.

Died at White Pigeon, Mich., Sept. 29, 1868, after a protracted illness, Miss Adeline Gortner, aged 26 years.

Mr. Daniel Baker and Miss Emma Fry were married on Oct. 3.

A handsome granite tomb-stone was put up last week in Muncy Cemetery to the memory of the late Tallman McCarty.

The boat built by Mr. John Mapes to convey his family from Beech Creek to Wilmington, N.C., passed down the Susquehanna one day last week, with all prospects of getting along alright.

Della Keller and Willard Hall will open a first class cigar and tobacco store on Main Street.

Harvey Harmon of Muncy Hills and Miss Cora Jarrett of South Williamsport were married recently.

ON Saturday Henry E. Warner of Pennsdale and his son, T.P. Warner of Williamsport, went in the hills to hun birds. The gentlemen succeeded in filling their game bags with a nice lot of pheasants and squirrels.

A pretty wedding was solemnized Saturday afternoon at four o’clock at the Lutheran Church when Miss Martha Louise VonNeida, of South Main Street, became the bride of T/Sgt. Robert S. Kunkel, of Harrisburg.

Miss Virginia M. Persun, of Cogan House, and Clifford Wentzler of Pennsdale, were married Saturday evening.

Word has been received from Sgt. John F. (Bud) Schoch, that he has arrived overseas at a destination somewhere in the Pacific.

Paul Gatz, who for seven years has been operating the Old Fort Nursery at Halls, has purchased seven acres of ground in this place, from William Pewterbaugh where he expects to enlarge his business with a greater output of trees and plants.

Harry Ort, aged 75 years, while engaged in roofing a shed near his home Saturday, fell ten feet when a scaffold, erected by himself, collapsed, throwing him to the round. He had suffered a slight concussion, and bruises.

Loss estimated at $50,000 resulted when an early morning blaze on Oct. 1 destroyed a large barn on the Wyno Farms estate just west of Halls Station.

Stephen Frantz of Muncy has embarked by plane for India where he will spend the next two years in Calcutta studying the behavior of the Lesser Bandicoot Rat.

Mr. and Mrs. Jake Akers Jr. announce the marriage of their daughter, Miss Teresa A. Akers to Sgt. James Rodarmel, son of Mr. and Mrs. John Rodarmel, all of Muncy.

Barry Sones, Hughesville, has returned to his new Navy assignment in San Diego, Calif., following a 15-day leave.

Construction Mechanic Third Class Steven C. Poust, 21, of near Muncy, is serving in South Viet Nam with the Third Naval Construction Brigade.

Services were conducted Sept. 28 for Rev. Clair E. Keafer, whose sudden death occurred at Geisinger Medical Center, Danville, on Sept. 25. Rev. Keafer was 63.

The Rev. David A. Harris has accepted a call to serve as pastor of Trinity Lutheran church, Hughesville church and will begin his new duties on Nov. 1.
