I thought we were done with summer before the equinox, then we suddenly went back to what seemed like June, not September. Now that October has begun, perhaps the pattern will settle into what the calendar tells us is to be expected.

Last weekend saw an unusual event in our community. A young man from Hughesville, James Trick, went off to war in defense of our nation and was killed in the line of duty almost 75 years ago, in the Hurtgen Forest in western Germany. After all this time, his remains were finally identified and he was laid to rest in Pleasant Hill Cemetery, with full military honors, including the awarding of the Silver Star and Purple Heart. It was a very moving event, and the remaining family members are relieved and delighted that he has finally come home.

East Lycoming School District students have completed more than a month of school and it is time for the Homecoming Parade and football game. Let’s all get out and support the team and the students who have organized the activities for this weekend. The Homecoming Dance will be held on Saturday evening, after the Friday parade and game.

The HHS Boys Soccer team has had a great season, with several players being recognized for their performance as area leading scorers. Congratulations to Nick Trevouledes, Austin Lewis, Justus Leighow, and Ethan Jackson! Also, the HHS Girls Soccer team has Morgan Hopkins among the area’s leading scorers and goal keepers Madison Young and Leah Peterman each have two shutouts to their credit! Hoorah, Spartan soccer teams! There are several games remaining in the regular season for both teams, so make sure you make time to enjoy our wonderful local athletic facilities and cheer on the HHS girls and boys.

Thur Oct 3-“Wee Move” program at Hughesville Area Public Library (HAPL), 146 South Fifth Street, 10:30 – 11:15 a.m. This program is geared for very busy children ages 1 to 5 years old and their siblings. It is designed to get kids moving! There are mats, a soft balance beam, basketball hoops, a teeter-totter, and more.

Fri Oct 4-“Art with Amber”, a new program for children at HAPL, where kids (ages 3 and up) are invited to explore age-appropriate art material with their caregivers, 10:30 – 11:15 a.m. Registration, by visiting or calling (570)584-3762, is appreciated.

Fri. Oct. 4-HHS Homecoming Parade preceding the Varsity Football game versus Mt. Carmel, 7 p.m. The East Lycoming Athletic Hall of Fame awards will be presented at Half-time of the game.

Sun Oct 6-Annual Hymn Sing at Old Immanuel Church, 2:30 p.m. Join the singing and enjoy the message at this fun gathering. The oldest Lutheran Church in Lycoming County was the “Mother Church” to 19 congregations in our county and on site is a cemetery with stones dating back to the earliest European settlements in the valley.
