March 16, 1872

The clothing of a little son of Isaac Gortner, of this borough, aged 3 years, caught fire from a spark from the stove on Monday and he was badly burned about his face and neck, before his mother could put the fire out. The little sufferer is doing well.

The mad dog excitement in the townships north and northeast of this borough has run high for two weeks. On Wednesday a dog made his appearance, biting a cow belonging to Isaac Watson, a dog belonging to Joshua Watson, two dogs, a cow and a calf belonging to Thomas Wood, Esq., a dog belonging to G. Hervey McMichael, one belonging to Louis Hill, and a dog and two cows belong to Abner Fahnestock, the latter killing the dog at his place.

On Monday, Walter, aged five years, son of Joesph Irvin, Esq., of Watsontown, died from the effects of eating laurel, while in the woods.

On Tuesday a team of horses attached to a loaded wagon, belong to Jacok Hickernell, of Union county, was crossing the ice in the river on his way to Watsontown when they broke through, the horses being drowned and the contents of the wagon, consisting of several dead hogs, a barrel of vinegar, about 150 pounds of butter and other produce. Mr.,, Hickernell narrowly escaped with his life.

Married-In Williamsport, on he 15th ult., George McCarty, of Muncy township, and Miss Martha Artley, of Wolfe township.

Johnie,s on of D.B. Dykins, Esq., aged 13 months, was very dangerously burned by his clothing taking fire Tuesday morning.

The sleighing over the Muncy Hills is said to have been very good last week.

Clyde Smith fell on the ice while having a friendly tussle with a schoolmate, last Friday evening, and badly sprained his ankle.

Daniel Clapp was thrown from his sleigh on Thursday and was knocked insensible in the fall. He is able to be around again.

Messrs. Becher Artley, Dimner Artley, Charles Artley, Fred Fiest, and Calvin Gortner, all of the Muncy township, started on Wednesday for the West where they expect to make their home in the future.

Married-At the home of her grandmother, on March 17, Miss Kate M. Shoemaker to Dr. A.M. Baldwin, of Girton, N.Y.

The Woman Vote-Only two more states are now needed to make ratification of the suffrage amendment an accomplished fact and with Delaware and Washington almost certain to vote favorably, votes of women now seem assured.

Born: To Mr. and Mrs. W. M. Haag, of Chicago, on March 8th, a daughter. Mrs. Haag before her marriage was Miss Elizabeth Linn, of his place.

Died: Albert F. Yung, of senior member of the mercantile firm of Bush & Bull company of Williamsport.

Philip P. Schneider on Friday afternoon committed suicide by hanging himself to a tree on Market street, South Williamsport in the woodland at the foot of the mountain. He was 62 years old.

The Muncy baseball team was organized for the coming season at a meting held recent.y. The team will be composed of the best local players.

The season’s worst and most destructive snowfall paralyzed the community early Thursday morning as an estimated nine inches of snow fell in less than 12 hours, disrupting power lines, blocking the highways, and wrecking telephone communications.

Ransom Moyer, Pennsdale, fractured one of his fingers on a fall on the ice.

Marriage announced of Lorraine M. Lambert, of Muncy, to Ralph Gleason Sones, of Hughesville. The couple were married March 11.

Word has been received of he coming marriage of Miss Willina McCarty, of Philadelphia, formerly of Muncy, and the late William J.McCarty. Miss McCarty will wed Frank Castar Reed, of Philadelphia on April 1.
