Bob Wilt’s Sports Limelights 3.26.1970
Highlighted this week is Muncy’s Larry Lauchle from the March 26, 1970 edition of The Luminary.
The meteoric career that being an excellent wrestler has fashioned for Muncy’s native Larry Lauchle was moved a notch higher last week when he was appointed varsity wrestling coach at the University of Pennsylvania. Lauchle, the last state champion Muncy had in 1956 and generally regarded as the greatest wrestler in MHS history, had a fabulous collegiate career at Pitt capped by winning an NCAA title as a senior.
He later became a champion wrestler in the U.S. Marines, and also qualified for the 1960 U.S. Olympic team which competed in Rome.
Upon completion of military service, Lauchle returned to this area as head coach at Shamokin high school for two years. Then two years ago, he was appointed freshman coach at the University of Pennsylvania, and now succeeds Don Frey as head mentor at the Ivy League institution.
Lauchle, who graduated from Muncy high school in 1957, is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Lauchle.
