Looking Backwards

1872

Nelson E. Nade, the murderer of the McBride’s near Linden, was brought before court on Tuesday. To the charge of murder, he plead, “not guilty”. The trail will start on Frida.

A boiler explosion took place at the small mill of Woodley, Dunbar and Moore, near Elimsport, on Thursday, a Mr. Lockwood, the engineer, being killed.

The store of S.H. Burrows and Co., at Picture Rocks, was entered by thieves, Thursday night of last week and robbed of $2,000 in money, and a lot of clothing and jewelry.

1882

Prof. C.L. Lose while out fishing last Saturday, caught a bass that weighted 3 1/4 pounds and measured 19 inches in length.

Miss Mylie Waltman of Clinton township, while riding horseback, one day last week, was thrown over her horse’s head, falling upon her head and shoulders and was quite badly hurt.

Deaths: Annie M. Feigles died at the family home on Bruner street on Thursday evening of last week, aged 55 years; Madeline Frontz, died at the home of her parents, on North Washington street, early Monday morning, aged 7 years, 5 months, and 6 days.

Muncy defeated the Mifflintown team Saturday afternoon on the local grounds in a good snappy game by a score of 8 to 4. the feature of the game was the playing of R. Confer and Pool. This was the third victory for the Muncy team last week.

A longtime Picture Rocks resident and retired official of the Burrows Furniture company, Howard W. Burrows, 79, died Aug. 9, at Muncy Valley Hospital after an extended illness.

Miss Gertrude Schell, of Watsontown, and Charles Miller, of Muncy, were united in marriage on Aug. 9.

Escorted to the altar by her father, Carol Ann Taylor, exchanged vows with Marlin O. Kleckner on Aug. 10.

S/Sgt. Raymond Laird has recently been discharged from service after serving four years in the Air Force.

Births: Mr. and Mrs. John Gray, Danville, a daughter, Aug. 5; A daughter to Mr. and Mrs. Richard Crawford, Montgomery, Aug. 9; Mr. and Mrs. Harry Perritt, Unityville, a son, Aug. 10; A daughter to Mr. and Mrs. Raymond Fry, Muncy.

After serving almost a year in Germany in different outfits, the Haynes brothers of Hughesville who hadn’t see each other in that time although 90 miles apart, met recently during battle maneuvers. Pfc. Kenneth Haynes, of the 43rd Division was stationed at Augsburg, while his brother Pfc. Glenn Haynes was at Heilbronn with the 28th Division.

Miss Marilyn Ritter, of Muncy, became the bride of Francis Frantz, of Hughesville, Aug. 18.

Petty officer third class William Bird, after spending a 15 day leave with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Melvin Bird Jr., of Muncy left Tuesday, Aug. 29, for the naval base at Damneck Va., where he will attend missile radar school.

100 Years Ago

Thursday, August 31, 1922

The Houseknecht annual reunion of the descendants of Benjamin and Sarah Houseknecht was held at Boak’s Park August 24th with 80 members present.

Ralph Smith has been confined to his home by illness.

William A. Ball is building an addition to the shirt factory on Academy Street.

The public schools of this place will open on Tuesday, Sept 5.

Margaret Fisher, of Williamsport, is spending a few days with her grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Jacob Fisher.

Mr. and Mrs. S.F. Houseknecht and son, Arthur, Mr. and Mrs. Cleon Houseknecht and son, Paul, attended the Sones reunion at Milton Park on Saturday.

Mr. and Mrs. C.E. Henry and daughter, and Mrs. Frank Jones and son, Reginald, returned Saturday from a two week’s motor trip through New York State and Michigan, traveling over 1300 miles.

Mrs. Henry Hoffman and daughter, of Camden, N.J. are guests of Mr. and Mrs. George Bugh of Second Street.
