Looking Backwards

The Muncy Seminary commenced its fifth year last Wednesday, under the management of Miss Julia Rose.

The Vigilant Fire Co., and the Keystone H. & L. Co., with the Muncy Cornet Band paraded through main street, last Monday night, each man carrying a lighted torch.

On Thursday, the 28th ult., fifteen men were terribly burned-one so badly that he died a few days after the accident-at the foundry of the Penn Iron Works, at Danville.

Sept. 21, 1922

Last Sunday afternoon when Harry McCarty was crossing Main street in front of the News Crawford House, he was struck by a car driven by Wm. Venrich, and knocked down, having his right arm broken between the wrist and the elbow, besides receiving several bruises.

William Madison, son of Mr. and Mrs. W.F. Madison, of South Market street, had his jaw bone broken las Tuesday afternoon while playing ball at the local park.

Deaths: Squire David W. Buffington died at his home on South Main street, Monday morning from tetanus, the result of a cut hie received on the bottom of his foot while walking in his garden on Sunday morning, Sept. 3rd, which a the time was not considered serious and was treated with home remedies, and it was not until the following Wednesday that he was compelled to give up and got to bed. He was aged 80 years, 4 months and 23 days.

Two new teachers and one returnee is all set for the opening of a new term at Pennsdale school Mrs. Schug, of Williamsport, to teach the lower grades, and Miss Nelle Matter, of Muncy township , to teach the middle grades. The third teacher and only returnee form last year is Miss Maggie Fague.

George L. Long has purchased a 60-passenger school bus and will transport the high school students of Jordan township to Hughesville.

Lois Woodling, of Muncy, and Earl Fraley, Muncy, were married on Aug. 22.

On August 23 Miss Delores Remsnyder, of Muncy Valley, became the bride of A/2c Russell R. Ulshafer, former resident of Muncy.

Engagement announced of Lucille Campbell, of Muncy, to Junior Melton Cameron of Montgomery.

The marriage of Mary K. Breidinger, of Muncy, to William Deitrick, of will take place on Aug. 29.

Deaths: William H. Dildine, 72, former Hughesville machine shop owner, died Friday; Addie Sharrow, 81, Hughesville, died Thursday.

Changing face: State highway routes 442 and 405 just east of Muncy are taking on a new face these days as highway refurbishing to create a cloverleaf entry to the Beltway in that area continues. The area from Bowl-Arena east about half a miles is being widened to four lane.

Catherine Heberling, of Muncy, weds Harold R. Brooks, of Montoursville, on Sept. 9.

Engagement announced of Mona D. Saxe, of Hughesville, to Harold J. Zofcin, of Shickshinny.

100 Years Ago

September 14, 1922

The third annual reunion of the descendants of Silas McCarty and Peter Michael families were held at Boak Park Labor Day, Sept 4, with 107 members present. The oldest surviving relative present being Mrs. Henry Opp.

A meeting of the King’s Heralds was held in the social rooms of the Methodist Episcopal church on Saturday afternoon. The members present were: Klea Montague, Ellen Hodge, Margaret Blakie, Alice Elder, Beatrice and Pauline Foust and Katherine and Byron Elder. At the close of the meeting a basket lunch was served.

James P. Miller and family, of Muncy Valley, have moved into their newly purchased property on East Broadway.

Mrs. Louis Peale has gone to Philadelphia to attend the funeral of her husband’s sister, who was killed in an automobile accident. His brother and wife were also injured.

Born, to Mr. and Mrs. Robert McCloskey of Renovo, a daughter. Mrs. McCloskey was formerly Miss Rebecca Martz of this place.

Charles Webster died at the Williamsport hospital Friday morning following an operation. He was sixty-six years of age and is survived by his wife and one son, Larue, of Huntersville. Funeral services were held at home on Sunday afternoon at 2 o’clock with interment in the cemetery at this place.

J.W. Buffington, ages 81 years, who has been Justice of the Peace at Muncy for the past 40 years, passed away at his residence Monday morning, suffering a week with an infected foot, developing lockjaw.
