Looking Backwards

Edith Taylor slipped and fell at her home in Muncy Creek township on Friday and broke her wrist.

A little daughter of A.J. Sanders residing on Water street, aged 6 years was so badly burned on Thursday afternoon that she died at 10 o’clock the same evening.

The public schools will not open on the first of December as announced. The new building will not be ready before the 8th.

Friday, Dec. 1, 1882

Charles W. Opp, formerly of Muncy Creek township, is now located at Ottertail, Minn.

Two or three large manufactories are to be located here next spring.

Twenty-three camp posts have been set up at intervals around the town and Muncy will hereafter be lighted.

Snow fell Sunday morning to the depth of four inches.

Deaths: Rose H. Painter died Friday last week, aged 65 years; Rev. J.T. Geistweit after ears of ill health died on November twentieth; Miss Susan Cornelison died at the Williamsport City Hospital Thanksgiving morning from pleura pneumonia, aged 67 years.

Richard Rogers, of Muncy, last week was graduated from the Army engineers officer candidate school at For Velvoir, Va., with the rank of second lieutenant in the Corps of Engineers.

Four fire alarms were answered in October by the Keystone Hook and Ladder Co. In addition, local firemen also aided in the 2-day river search for the bodies of two area duck hunters.

Six new tennis courts will be created at the Munch high school athletic complex and be ready for use in spring 1973.

Susan Gaige, of Canton, and Ashley West, formerly of Hughesville, were married on Nov. 4.

Joseph L. Schaefer, 28, of Allentown, son of the late Harold Schaefer who was principal of Hughesville schools, was killed early Sunday, Nov. 12, in a one-car accident near Lamar.

Air Force Technical Sergeant Walter H. Kahle, of Montgomery, has graduated from the Air Force Communication Service Non-commissioned Officer Academy at Richards-Gebaur AFB, Mo.

100 Years Ago

November 23, 1922

Bruce Miller, Hughesville R.D., dislocated his knee in a fall.

William Kitchen, who is building on South Main street, has the cellar wall completed.

Charles Kahler underwent an operation at the John Hopkins hospital at Baltimore, and is getting along nicely.

Miss Mary Wilson delightfully entertained the Polly Prims at her home in Muncy Monday evening, at which time the engagement of Miss Hazel MCarty, of this place, to Willard R. Robb also of Hughesville, was announced.

Funeral services for Jeremiah Flick were held at the home of Mrs. Bert Smith Tuesday afternoon at 2 o’clock. Interment was made in Pleasant Hill cemetery. Mr. Flick was a Civil war veteran of Company D, 7th Regiment of Pennsylvania, volunteer cavalry.

Ralph Smith, a member of the Ogdonia Fish and Game club, shot a fair-sized bear last Friday.

Peter Confer has presented the firemen, for their hall, a beautiful deer head, which he shot last fall.

The dates for Hughesville’s “A Passing Show” are December 7-8. It’s a splendid big home talent show under the direction of Anna Lilyan Dunkel, a professional coach, who stages and costumes her shows splendidly. The show is under the auspicies of The Auxiliary of the American Legion. “It’s really some show”.
