Looking Backwards

Dec. 12, 1874

J.H. Mengle, Esq., has received he contract to lay the gas pipes.

The school board of this borough, at a meeting on Monday, vote of 3 to 3, refused the hall of the new school building to a dancing school.

The water was drawn from the West ranch canal, and the boys are happy over the splendid skating.

The work of laying the pipes of the Muncy Gas Company has begun. James Fredericks and Robert Lebo have the contract for digging and refilling the trenches.

The old bank building next door to H. Noble and Company’s sore, has been leased for an express office. Companies reported by Daniel Waltman and William Shoemaker will soon move the the new location.

The station of the Reading railroad at Halls was broken into recently and property belonging to W.. Clark Painter, the agent, stolen.

Dec. 14, 1883

The Muncy Valley House under the management of Emery and Buffington, is regaining all its old time popularity.

The boys and girls of Miss Mazie Trumbower’s school gave her a surprise party Friday evening as a token of regard.

Supt. Riddell expects an unusually large attendance at the teachers institute next week.

Dec.13, 1923

Deaths: At the home at Overbrook on Wednesday morning, Dec. 12, Emma A. Painter, aged 70 years, 7 months and 6 days.

100 Years Ago

Dec. 14, 1922

House Entered

James Carpenter, son of William Carpenter, of West Third street, Williamsport, was arrested yesterday for entering the house of Mrs. Laura Ball on Monday afternoon and stealing various articles and some money. He finally confessed and tried to implicate another boy, but up to the present time has failed to identify him or reveal his name. The boy claims to be 12 years old. He was held before Squire Fox for a further hearing. A fountain pen has been returned by one of the school girls he gave it to.

Deaths and Funerals: The funeral of Mrs. Frank A. Reeder took place Tuesday afternoon at 3 o’clock from the residence, Rev. W.H. Traub, of York, officiating. Interment was made at Pleasant Hill cemetery. She is survived by her husband and four sisters: Mrs. H.D. Sevison of town, and Katherine, Margaret and Evelyn of Washington, D.C. In the death of Mrs. Reeder the town has lost one of the leaders in church and social affairs. She was a member of Trinity Lutheran church, also of the Sunday School and the various organizations of the church, where she was always found as one of the willing workers. The floral tributes were very beautiful and in great abundance. The services were very largely attended, four members of her class from the Williamsport High School were present. The business places of town were closed during the services

Helen, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Harry Warburton, is confined to her home by diphtheria.

Mrs. Eliza Mehrling is seriously ill at her home on Main street.

Jay McClintock, of Muncy Valley spent the week-end with Mr. and Mrs. Milton Springer.

Gary Arnold, of South Second street, listened to a concert last evening given at St. Louis, on his new Radiophone,

Eunice Bartlow, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Frank Bartlow, underwent an operation at her home on Main street and is getting along nicely.

Charles Ande and son, Ira, Louis Corson, Edgar Snyder, Taylor Armstrong, Robert Armstrong, Lee Rea, Harold Cadman, Ellis Houseknecht, James Reed and Wilson Buck attended the boxing show at the Majestic theatre Monday evening.

An appeal has come from the War Veterans at the Mount Alto Sanitarium to the American Legion for the following articles, which are badly needed: Sweaters, socks, gloves, handkerchiefs, tooth paste, tooth brushes, candy, playing cards, sewing kits, fruit cake, stationery, lead pencils, good reading matter and shaving sticks. All members who will give to this cause are asked to bring their contribution to the next Auxiliary meeting or to Mrs, Poust before December 16.
