Looking Backwards

Feb. 7, 1874

James D. Brewer, of this place, goes to New York on Monday to exhibit his patent Fish-way before the U,S. Fish Commission.

Measles has made a clean sweep of this town and vicinity, and have not confined themselves to the children, as many grown people having had them severely.

The new Bank Building is about completed and will be occupied soon, giving the First National one of the most complete banking houses in the county.

Feb. 9, 1883

Edward Doogan was thrown off a sled near the G.N. Beeber place, below Port Penn, on Monday and was severely cut on the head.

Mr. and Mrs. Charles Person, Picture Rocks, celebrated t heir golden wedding anniversary on Thursday evening.

It is said that Isreal Sanders, of Picture Rocks, altho 76 years of age., tasted ice cream for the first time at a party given in his honor one evening last week.

Jan. 24, 1923

Married: Harry M. Shaner, of Muncy R.D., and Miss Ethel Woodside, of Unityville, were united in marriage on Monday morning.

Births: Mr. and Mrs. John Bruch, on Tuesday morning, a 9-pound boy, who has been named John Lawrence.

Deaths: Sarah Gortner died at her home here on Monday, aged 61 years; Emanuel Sheets died Sunday morning at his home in Muncy Creek township. He was aged 78 years.

January 25, 1923

Illness

Clay Miller is ill at his home on Cemetery street.

Mrs. Charles McCarty and Miss Grace McCarty are confined to their home by illness.

Born on Friday, to Mr. and Mrs. Raymond Hess, a daughter.

Born, on Sunday, to Mr. and Mrs. Harry Travelet, a daughter.

Deaths/funerals

Mrs. Mary E. Starr, widow of Reuben Starr, died Monday morning at her home in Tivoli. She was aged eighty-two years. Funeral services were held Wednesday afternoon at 2 o’clock at the Unityville church, with interment at Unityville.

The funeral of Mrs. Sophia Laird, widow of John C. Laird, who died from the effects of a stroke, took place from the family residence on Main street Monday afternoon at 1o’clock. She was a lifelong resident of Hughesville and was celebrating 79 years.

Henry Poust, aged seventy-nine, died at his home on Railroad street, on Tuesday morning. He was a veteran of the Civil war. He is survived by his widow and two children, William A. Poust, of Fairview, and Mrs. W.J. George, of Catawissa. Funeral services will be held on Friday afternoon from his home, with burial to follow in Muncy cemetery.

Sleighing Parties

Miss Whilma McConnell recently entertained a sleighing party at the home of her aunt, Mrs. R. Egly, of Muncy. Those present were Nashla Ashkar, Anna Sutliff, Beatrice Hess, Pauline Reed, Madeline Stiger, Mae Seltzer, Richard Shaffer, Lewis Ellison, Carlos Starr, Bruce Boatman, Grant Whipple and Charles Cook. They were chaperoned by Mrs. Chester McConnell.

The following persons from Montgomery enjoyed a sleighing party at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Frank Bartlow Friday evening: Misses Edna Metzger, Kate Felix, Emily Start and Mary Childs, John Woodling, Fred Beeber, John Everheart, Russel Ranck, Theodore Lower, Harold Miller and Burch Miller. Those present from town: Edna Clark, Hilda Stiger, Mildred Bartlow and Issac Aderhold.
