Fire at Egli’s Cigar Store-What might have proven a serious fire broke out Tuesday morning in the Egli cigar store, next room to the Zealer restaurant. Mr. Egli had built a fresh fire and the overheated pipe which passes through the partition set fire to the word work. The fire department responded to the alarm and the blaze was quickly extinguished by he use of chemical apparatus.

Hymeneal-Leonard T. Wertman and Arvilla E. Foust were married on Thursday, Feb. 22nd.; Thomas Sherwood and Myrtle Wagner were united in marriage on Saturday afternoon, Feb. 24th; and Bruce A. Opp, of Montour County, and S. Florence Vogentz, of Strawberry Ridge, were married on Tuesday.

Deaths: C.F. Dewald, of Lockport, N.Y., and son of our townsman, Jacob Dewald, died Saturday evening at the Lockport hospital; Barbara A. Elliot died at her home near Pennsdale on Monday. She was 70 years of age; Miss Nellie Johnston, sister of “Had” Johnston who some years ago conducted a livery stable in the rear of the Crawford house, was found dead in bed at her home in Jerseytown on Monday morning.

Mr. and Mrs. H.W. Bubb spent Sunday in Williamsport.

Howard Reed visited his father in Lairdsville on Sunday.

Miss Ione Buck spent the weekend with her parents in Clarkstown.

Frederick W. Foster, of Berkley, Cal., is spending some time as the guest of Mr. and Mrs. Howard Lyon.

ILLNESS

George Barto was taken to the Williamsport Private hospital today, where he will undergo an operation.

Olive Haywood, who is training for a nurse at the hospital in Philadelphia, has been seriously ill with scarlet fever.

J.O. Coleman has been ill for the past week.

DEATHS

Ruth Olive, the one-year-old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. George Trick, died at the home of her parents on Academy street on Saturday. Funeral services were held from the house Tuesday afternoon at 1:30 o’clock and interment was made in Pleasant Hill cemetery.

Funeral services for Alice Glendine, the infant daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Harry Travelet of Railroad street, were held Sunday afternoon and interment was made in Pleasant cemetery.

The funeral of Mrs. Margaret Busler will take place from her late home on North Second street, Saturday afternoon at 2o’clock, interment in Pleasant Hill cemetery. Mrs. Busler is the widow of Samuel Busler. She was aged 74 years, and one of the oldest active members of the W.C.T.U.

SOCIAL EVENTS

Miss Rebecca Beeber’s class of the Lutheran Sunday School will hold a social this week (Thursday) evening at 8 o’clock at the home of Mrs. Cletus Houck, on North Main street.

Zachariah Bull hosted a chicken and waffle dinner at his home on Saturday.
