Looking Backwards

July 25, 1874

The office of the Sullivan Democrat at Laport was struck by lightning, one day last week, and editor, MR. Pryor, made a narrow escape.

The Lycoming County Normal School will be open August 3.

Wm. F. Grassler, of this place, had invented a fish-way.

A man named Cook, was seriously injured by a falling derrick at the stone quarry of D.P. Gevie, in Clinton township.

July 28, 1883

On Saturday the large planning mill of Barber and Scully, with their office building, the P and R station, the Henderson store, and several other buildings were destroyed by fire, causing a loss of from $40,000 to $50,000 which was partly covered by insurance.

A horse belonging to to Wilson Opp, in Muncy Creek township, walked into an open well and fell a distance of about 20 feet. Shortly afterward another horse fell into the well the same way. The animals were brought up by means of ropes.The one horse died with broken neck.

The razing of the warehouse of the West Branch Bell Telephone company at its main office site in Muncy was begun this week.

Horseplay while they were hunting groundhogs, caused 13-year old Harley Walters, of Hughesville, to be shot to death by his pal, Harold L. Hill, about 8 p.m., Monday, on a back road near Hughesville.

The Mellen Plant Manufacturing company at Hughesville has been sold to Nathaniel Gora, of York, Pa.

100 Years Ago

July 19, 1923

Mrs. Walter Beck died Sunday at her home in Picture Rocks at the age of 70. She is survived by her husband and four children. She had lived in Picture Rocks ever since her marriage, 52 years ago.

Funeral services for Jacob Bower were held yesterday afternoon at 2:30 at his home in Williamsport. Mr. Bower was a lifelong resident of Hughesville and was one of the oldest employees of the J.K. Rishel Furniture Company. He has lived in Williamsport for the last two years.

Robert Lorah, who recently severed his right wrist, is getting along nicely.

Born to Mr. and Mrs. Otto Montgomery on Saturday, July 14, a son.

Born, to Mr. and Mrs. Wilbur Ryan, on Satuday, July 14, a daughter, and has been named Betty Louise.

The Legion Auxiliary meets at Mrs. Della Gordner’s Tuesday evening, July 24.

Auxiliary food sale Saturday, July 21, at Dr. Corson’s Office.

Mrs. George Gray was among the numerous Hughesville patrons who attended the ball game at Williamsport on July 11.

Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Birdsell and daughters, Virginia and Jessie May, were recent visitors of relatives near Lairdsville.

Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Gautsch of town, and Mr. and Mrs. Harry Gordner, of Muncy, left Tuesday on a motor trip to Cedar Rapids, Iowa.

“Irish” Meusel of the Giants, by cracking out a brace of successive homers off Grover Alexander, accomplished a feat which no other player has ever been able to do during Alex’s career in the National League.

The world’s record for throwing a baseball is 381 feet, 2-1/2 inches. Top record for batting a ball is 354 feet, 1-1/2 inches.
