Sept. 6, 1874

James P. Guyer, Tomas G. Downing and John Kramer shot 45 grey and black squirrel on Tuesday.

A young son of Otis L. McCarty, residing near Clarkstown, had his hand badly crushed on Tuesday by being caught in the gearing of a threshing machine.

Sept. 7, 1883

William Ritter, of Lairdsville, has the fastest horse in this section, record 2:30.

Work on the foundation of the new ReadingDepot, foot of Penn street, was begun last week.

“Grit” is quite disgusted with the flood of gossip that is now deluging Williamsport. It says if half were true, the lumber city would be a very fast place.

100 years ago

Sept. 6, 1923

A 65-foot mast tower, in the construction of the new bridge over Muncy Creek just this side of town topple over last Friday morning. None of the workmen were on the tower, and no one was hurt.

Deaths: Captain John M. Rhoads, relative to Mrs. J. W. Albright, of this place. He was 85 and a veteran of the Civil War.

Reunions

The Taylor family will hold their first family reunion, Labor Day, at the home of Mifflin Taylor, near Tivoli.

The annual Weaver and Fague family reunion was held last Saturday at Boak’s park.

Mr. and Mrs. F.W. Robbins attended the Robbins reunion held near Unityville last Saturday.

The reunion of the Dewalt and Minier families will be held Saturday, of this week, September 1, at Boak park.

The Griggs-Eder reunion will be held at Memorial park, Labor Day. All relative and friends are cordially invited to attend.

The annual Kepner reunion will be held at the late William Kepner [residence] in Penn township on Saturday, September 1.

The second annual reunion of the Keebler and Andrews families, was held Saturday at Boak’s park. There were about 125 persons in attendance.

Births

Born, to Mr. and Mrs. William E. Becht, of near town, on August 18, a daughter.

Death

Peter H. Confer died at his home at Picture Rocks Saturday evening at the age of 74 years. He is survived by his wife and the following children: Mrs. W.R. Shelter, of Williamsport; Viola Confer, at home; Mrs. C.M. Daye and Charles, of Picture Rocks; Brady and Russell, of Eagles Mere. Interment was made in Pleasant Hill cemetery.

Moved

Charles Myers, of Lairdsville, who for several years conducted the flouring mill near that town, will move to Hughesville, having purchased the John Myers property on the corner of Broad and West Cemetery streets.

Hon. D.W. Osler has purchased the Sell property, on South Main street.

Marriages

Miss Martha Slate entertained a number of friends at the Nippenuice cottage reently in honor of Miss Martha Calvert, who marriage to Clarence Eli Wilson will take place Sept. 8.

Invitations have been issued for the wedding of Josephine Beck to Charles Walters Ellis, of Willow Grove. The wedding will take place September 14.

W.C.T.U. Meeting

The Women’s Christian Temperance Union met at the home of Mrs. C.F. Johnson on Tuesday evening. Superintendents of the various departments were appointed and work planned for the coming year. The Union asks the co-operation of the ladies of the town, in their efforts for the betterment of our town and country.
