MUNCY – The continuing cold weather had not kept the area’s seniors from getting out and enjoying some free time at the STEP, Inc. Meck Senior Center. Every Friday afternoon the group makes a different craft. Organized by Barb Shaffer, a variety of crafts and favors are made by the senior members who wish to participate.

For Valentine’s Day, they made table cup favors and are now making green and white “friendship pins” for St. Patrick’s Day. A party is planned for Easter and some colorful table arrangements are being planned for display.

“We try to have a craft for everyone to take home,” Shaffer said. “Last spring we decorated straw hats with flowers for April and some clay pot arrangements. I like to do everything with flowers.” At Christmas time, they made cinnamon stick stars. Another time they made flower arrangements using beer bottles for vases. “That was a good time,” she added.

“Sometimes we make things for the Meals on Wheels participants,” said member, Lois Velkoff. “We attach the favors with the meals.”

Friday is designated “Craft Day” according to director, Debby Dowdy, “and we would like more to come and join us.” Dowdy said they had a valentine ornament contest last month. They were judged by the members, and the winner went home with a box of chocolates. “Everyone got a chance to vote.” There were also carnation vases for door prizes during the Valentine’s party.

At Christmas time, Mary Ann Decker came in and made Christmas wreaths with the members. Dowdy said, “Anyone is welcome to come in and share a craft with us.” In the summer they did nature paintings, and another time they painted ferns on fabric aprons. “Everyone has a good time,” Dowdy said.
